Chapter 4 - The Digital Snake

Two days later, my phone exploded with notifications.
It started at 8:00 AM while I was making breakfast for Santiago. First came a text from my best friend, Sofia: Camila, don't look at Facebook right now. Just call me. Then came another text from a former coworker: Is this true? What is happening?
My stomach dropped into a cold abyss. I opened my laptop and went straight to my local community Facebook group—a massive group of over thirty thousand residents from our district in Guadalajara, where local businesses, family news, and neighborhood events were posted.
Pinned right near the top was a long post written by a fake profile named “Guadalajara Truths.”
The post featured a photo of me taken from my personal social media page, alongside a photo of Santiago.
The caption was horrific:
“WARNING TO ALL PARENTS IN THE DISTRICT: Be careful of Camila Gomez. She is a neglectful single mother who regularly leaves her eight-year-old child unattended for hours to pursue her personal life. Recently, she abandoned her child outside her elderly parents' house during a family gathering, causing a scene and trying to extort money from her own aging father under threat of fake abuse allegations. Keep this toxic woman away from our community events!”
In the comments, dozens of local neighbors who didn't know the full story were already typing angry responses: “Disgusting!” “How can a mother treat her family like that?” “Someone should call child protective services on her!”
I sat at the kitchen island, my breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. My chest felt like it was being squeezed by an iron band. I looked over at the living room, where Santiago was peacefully playing with his Lego bricks on the rug, completely unaware that his face was being dragged through a digital mud pit.
My phone rang. It was Sofia.
“Camila! Have you seen it?” Sofia asked, her voice frantic.
“Who did this, Sofia?” I choked out, tears of absolute rage stinging my eyes. “Who would do something so sick?”
“It was Lorena,” Sofia stated flatly. “I know her IP address signature because she used that exact same fake profile last year to write fake positive reviews for her failing restaurant! Camila, she’s trying to destroy your reputation so your boss at the marketing firm fires you! She thinks if you lose your job, you’ll be forced to back down and make peace with your mother!”
A cold, diamond-hard clarity washed over me. The shock vanished, replaced by an intense, terrifying focus.
Lorena thought she was playing a game of petty social media gossip. She thought she could hide behind anonymous profiles and tear down the life I had worked eight years to build with my own bare hands. She didn't realize that a mother protecting her child does not fold under pressure—she becomes a force of nature.
I closed the laptop screen gently.
“Sofia,” I said into the phone, my voice dropping into a deadly whisper.
“Yes?”
“Do you still have contact with your cousin who works as a senior digital forensics investigator for the state attorney’s office?”
“Yes,” Sofia replied, catching her breath. “Why?”
“Tell him I need a certified IP trace report within twenty-four hours,” I said. “And tell him I’m filing a formal criminal lawsuit for cyber-harassment, criminal defamation, and illegal publication of a minor’s photograph.”

I looked over at Santiago, who looked up from his Legos and flashed me a sweet, toothy smile.
“Lorena wanted a war,” I whispered. “Now she’s going to get one.”
