Chapter 5 - The Press Conference

At 3:00 PM, the steps of the Maricopa County Superior Courthouse were packed with reporters, news vans, camera crews, and curious onlookers.

Vanessa stood at the center podium, wearing a black dress, dark sunglasses, and a silk scarf tied around her head to cover her hair. Beside her stood her high-profile media attorney, a greasy man named Julian Vance (no relation to Arthur Vance) who specialized in high-payout defamation lawsuits.

Vanessa held a handkerchief to her eyes, sniffling pathetically as her attorney adjusted the microphones.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the press," Julian Vance announced into the bank of microphones. "Today, my client, Vanessa Miller, comes forward at great personal risk to expose the dark, abusive reality behind the gated walls of the Ferris family estate. For six months, Ms. Miller was subjected to psychological torture, physical isolation, and extreme religious fanaticism by Mrs. Evelyn Ferris, the mother of tech CEO Daniel Ferris..."

In the crowd, reporters scribbled furiously on their pads, cameras flashing constantly.

Vanessa stepped up to the microphone, her voice trembling dramatically. "I... I only wanted to be a good daughter-in-law," she sobbed. "I loved Daniel with all my heart. But his mother... she couldn't stand sharing him. On Monday, she dragged me into the garden, forced scissors into my hand, and threatened to destroy my life if I didn't strip myself of my dignity..."

"Are you referring to this video, Ms. Miller?!" a reporter yelled, holding up a tablet displaying the leaked five-second clip.

"Yes!" Vanessa cried out softly. "That clip shows the terrible truth!"

"Then perhaps you'd like to play the rest of it," a calm, clear voice echoed from the back of the media crowd.

The reporters turned around in unison.

The crowd parted down the middle as I walked slowly toward the podium. I wore a simple, elegant navy blue dress. My silver hair had been styled by Daniel into a sleek, stunning bob that framed my face with dignity and grace.

Walking beside me was my son, Daniel, dressed in a sharp dark suit, flanked by Attorney Sarah Lin and two technical security assistants carrying a massive portable LED projection screen.

The reporters erupted into absolute chaos, flashing cameras wildly and shoving microphones forward.

"Mrs. Ferris! Mrs. Ferris! Are the allegations true?!" "Daniel! Did you cover up your mother's abuse?!"

Vanessa’s attorney stepped forward angrily. "This is a private press conference! You have no right to interfere!"

"This is a public courthouse step, Mr. Vance," Attorney Lin stated with razor-sharp authority. "And we are here to exercise our right to reply to blatant criminal defamation."

Before Vanessa or her lawyer could react, Daniel’s technical team set up the massive LED screen directly behind the podium, plugging it into a high-powered mobile battery bank.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the media," Daniel announced, his voice booming across the courthouse square, commanding instant silence from the fifty reporters present. "For the past three days, my mother and I have been subjected to a vile smear campaign engineered by a woman who attempted to steal our family’s legacy. You have all seen the five-second edited clip released by Ms. Miller. Now, I invite you all to watch the full, unedited, high-definition security recording captured by our estate’s security system."

Daniel hit a button on a remote control.

The massive LED screen flickered to life.

The 4K video footage roared through the high-powered speakers:

The full scene played in front of fifty national reporters: The footage showed me sitting peacefully on the chair. It showed Vanessa holding the scissors with a cruel, mocking laugh. It played the crystal-clear audio that made every single person in the crowd gasp in horror:

"Shorter... You look like a village widow... Who do you think he'll choose? His sad old mother or the woman carrying his future?"

The footage showed Chloe laughing and pouring champagne, showed Vanessa bragging about fake pregnancy, showed her snipping my long silver hair with deliberate cruelty, and finally, showed Daniel arriving under the rose arch, his face frozen in heartbreak.

The courthouse steps went completely, dead silent.

Vanessa’s face turned as pale as a bedsheet. Her sunglasses slipped off her nose, clattering onto the concrete.

The reporters looked from the screen back to Vanessa, their expressions shifting from curiosity to absolute, overwhelming disgust.

"Ms. Miller!" a reporter from the Arizona Republic shouted, her voice shaking with rage. "You lied! You were the one abusing her!" "Ms. Miller! Did you forge medical documents about a pregnancy?!" "Is it true you pawned family heirlooms?!"

"No! Shut it off! Shut it off!" Vanessa screamed frantically, lunging toward the projection screen, but Attorney Lin stepped firmly in her path.

"The full, unedited video file, along with the official police reports, the pawn shop receipts, and the clinic invoices, have just been sent directly to every major news outlet in the country," Attorney Lin declared smoothly to the cameras. "Furthermore, a civil lawsuit for five million dollars in defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress has been filed in this very courthouse against Ms. Miller and her legal counsel."

Julian Vance, realizing he had been dragged into a career-destroying nightmare by his own client, instantly packed up his leather briefcase, turned his back on Vanessa, and hurried down the courthouse steps without saying another word.

Vanessa stood completely alone at the podium, surrounded by flashing cameras, screaming questions, and the undeniable, blinding light of her own exposed evil.
