Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Ledger

Six months later.
The Pacific coastline looked different in the autumn sunlight. The jagged rocks below the Costa estate were no longer a symbol of isolation and danger; they were simply the foundation of a fortress that finally felt like home.
The grand ballroom had been completely rebuilt, but this time, there were no armed guards hiding in the shadows, no secret cameras recording betrayal, and no forced alliances signed in blood.
Inside the executive suite overlooking the bay, I sat at a polished mahogany desk reviewing the quarterly financial statements of the newly restructured shipping conglomerate. Every port from Seattle to Vancouver operated under our flag, legally, cleanly, and without a single shadow of corruption.
The door opened without a knock.
Gabriel walked in, holding two cups of black coffee. He set one down beside my laptop, leaning over my shoulder to scan the bottom line of the spreadsheet.
“Net profit is up twenty-two percent from last quarter,” Gabriel noted, a hint of pride in his deep voice. “You’re making me a very rich man, Miss Hayes.”
“I’m making us a legitimate empire, Mr. Costa,” I corrected him, turning around in my chair to face him.
I wore a sharp, tailored blazer—far cry from the soaked canvas sneakers and torn sweater I had worn the night Diane sold me for fifty thousand dollars.
Gabriel rested his hands on the arms of my chair, trapping me in the best possible way. He looked down at me, his gray eyes shining with an absolute, unwavering devotion that he reserved for no one else in this world.
“You know,” Gabriel murmured, his face inches from mine, “I never did ask you what you wanted when this was all over.”
May you like
“I have everything I want,” I whispered, my hand rising to rest gently against his cheek. “A safe room, a balanced ledger, and a man who knows that love isn't about what you throw away—it’s about what you choose to keep.”
Gabriel smiled, leaned down, and kissed me softly, sealing an account that would never, ever be audited again.
