Chapter 6 - The True Mastermind

The revelation sent shockwaves through the entire legal team.
At 8:00 a.m. the following morning, Claire Vance arrived at the mountain safehouse accompanied by two senior investigators from the federal prosecutor’s office. The storm outside had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, ice-blue morning sky.
We sat in the safehouse dining room around a large oak table covered in financial ledgers, bank routing slips, and corporate registration documents.
"You were right, Violet," Claire said, pushing a thick blue folder across the table toward me. "The forensic accountants worked through the night. Evelyn wasn't the timid, terrified victim she played in front of the neighbors. She was the architect."
I opened the folder.
Document after document bore my mother’s elegant, cursive signature: Evelyn Vance-Payne.
Twenty-two years ago, when my biological father died in a tragic car accident, he left behind a three-million-dollar life insurance policy intended entirely for my education and future care. Evelyn had spent five years trying to access the trust, but my father’s strict legal provisions prevented her from touching a single cent until I turned twenty-five—or unless I was declared legally incompetent due to severe, recurring psychiatric trauma.
"When she married Victor Payne six years ago," Claire explained, pointing at a corporate flowchart, "she found the perfect hammer for her nail. Victor had the violent temper and the low intelligence required to act as her blunt instrument. She used Victor to beat you, humiliate you, and attempt to break your mind so she could file for legal conservatorship over your father’s multi-million-dollar estate."
My breath hitched in my chest. The horror of it was so profound, so utterly monstrous, that even Sarah Reyes let out a low curse under her breath.
All those years... all those evenings sitting in the living room... all those times my mother looked at me with those cold, empty eyes while Victor raised his fists...
She wasn't holding back out of fear of Victor. She was enjoying it. She was waiting for me to break. She was watching her goldmine mature with every bruise on my skin.
"She picked Victor because he was predictable," I whispered, repeating the exact words I had said to Victor right before he knocked me unconscious. "She fed his ego, pointed him at me, and let him do her dirty work."
"And when you sprung your trap at the hospital," Claire added, "Evelyn realized her entire game was up. She knew that if the federal authorities looked closely at Payne Contracting, they wouldn't just find Victor's petty bribery—they would find her multi-million-dollar embezzlement of your father's trust fund."
"Where is she now?" I asked, my voice dropping an octave into pure, unyielding stone.
"She’s being transferred to the Federal Detention Center in Boston," Claire said. "Her bail hearing is scheduled for tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM. Her lawyers are pushing for emergency release under house arrest, claiming she suffers from severe heart complications."
I closed the folder with a sharp snap.
I looked at Sarah, then at Claire.
"I am attending that bail hearing," I declared. "And I am going to address the court personally."

"Violet, your physical condition—" Claire began.
"My physical condition is strong enough to stand on my own two feet," I interrupted, standing up from the table. "For five years, my mother forced me to be a silent spectator in my own destruction. Tomorrow, she is going to hear my voice."
