Chapter 5 - The Fall of Vanessa

The small, cramped apartment on the outskirts of the city was a far cry from the luxury penthouse Vanessa Cole had envisioned when she first agreed to become Daniel Mercer’s mistress. The air smelled stale, suitcases were stacked near the door, and the constant noise of city traffic hummed outside the cracked window.
Vanessa paced back and forth across the hardwood floor, her designer heels clicking sharply. She held her phone to her ear, listening to the monotonous ringing on the other end.
"Pick up, Daniel! Pick up!" she muttered under her breath, her voice trembling with panic.
When the call finally went to voicemail for the fifth time, she slammed the phone down onto the kitchen counter. Daniel was ignoring her. Ever since the disastrous deposition, he had locked himself inside his mother’s townhouse, drowning his anxieties in alcohol and refusing to answer her calls.
Suddenly, a sharp, authoritative knock sounded at the front door.
Vanessa froze. She took a slow step back toward the kitchen, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Who... who is it?" she called out cautiously.
"Ms. Vanessa Cole?" a heavy, official voice echoed from the hallway. "This is Officer Ramirez with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Bureau. We have a warrant for your arrest and a subpoena for all electronic devices in your possession."
Vanessa’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked wildly around the room, eyeing the back exit near the fire escape. She grabbed her leather purse from the counter and made a desperate dash for the kitchen door.
Before her hand could touch the brass doorknob, the front door burst open with a loud CRACK.
Two uniformed officers and a female detective wearing a sharp trench coat stepped into the apartment.
"Vanessa Cole, don't move!" Detective Miller commanded, displaying her badge clearly. "Keep your hands where we can see them!"
"I didn't do anything!" Vanessa shrieked, dropping her purse as her hands flew into the air, tears instantly smearing her heavy eyeliner. "It was all Daniel! He forged the signatures! He told me the expense accounts were approved by the board! I was just his assistant! I was just following orders!"
"Save it for the prosecutor, Ms. Cole," Detective Miller said coldly, stepping forward and grabbing Vanessa’s wrists, clicking steel handcuffs firmly around her wrists. "We have email traces showing you personally created fake vendor invoices for 'Apex Global Ventures' and transferred over eight hundred thousand dollars to your private account in the Bahamas."
"No! Daniel gave me that money!" Vanessa sobbed hysterically as she was turned around and escorted toward the door. "He promised me we were going to move to Saint Lucia! He said his wife was stupid and didn't know anything about money!"
As Vanessa was led out into the hallway in handcuffs, she passed a tall figure standing near the elevator doors.
It was me.
Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks, her chest heaving, tears streaming down her blotchy face. The glamour, the pride, and the condescending arrogance she had displayed on the day she walked into my home holding Daniel’s arm were completely gone.
"Clara..." Vanessa whimpered, her voice cracking in pathetic desperation. "Please... talk to them! Tell them I didn't know about Lily! I swear I didn't know she was dying! If I had known, I would have made him answer his phone! Please, don't let them ruin my life!"
I looked at Vanessa Cole. I saw no mastermind, no formidable rival—only a shallow, opportunistic parasite who had traded her integrity for fake jewelry and champagne.
"You knew he was married, Vanessa," I said, my tone as quiet and devastating as an arctic wind. "You knew he had a three-year-old daughter at home. You didn't care about Lily's life, and you didn't care about mine, as long as Daniel was buying you designer bags with stolen money."
"I was stupid! I was foolish!" Vanessa cried, struggling against the officer’s firm grip.
"Yes, you were," I agreed softly. "And now you will pay the price for every single dollar you stole from my family."
I turned my back on her as the officers dragged her screaming toward the service elevator.
I walked out to my waiting car, where Arthur was sitting in the backseat with a laptop open on his knees.
"Vanessa Cole's bank accounts have been frozen," Arthur reported as I slid into the leather seat beside him. "She has offered a complete state’s evidence plea. In exchange for a reduced sentence, she is turning over all text messages, personal emails, and secret recordings she made of Daniel discussing how he planned to bleed the Vance Family Trust dry."
I looked out the tinted window as the police cruiser pulled away with Vanessa inside.
"Then Daniel is completely isolated now," I said.
May you like
"Completely," Arthur confirmed. "He has no allies left, no money, and no legal leverage. The District Attorney has formally upgraded the charges against him to felony grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and tax fraud. His trial date is set for next month."
I closed my eyes, letting out a long, slow breath. The dominoes were falling exactly as they were meant to. But the final, most painful chapter was still waiting to be written.
