Chapter 10 - The Whole Book (Conclusion)

The golden hour of evening settled over the farm, casting a warm orange glow across the porch.
Lily came running up the steps, her cheeks flushed pink from playing, her stuffed rabbit tucked under her arm. She dropped the tennis ball onto the porch floor and tumbled right into Matteo’s lap.
"I’m tired, Matteo," she announced with utter seriousness, laying her head against his chest.
Matteo wrapped his large arms around her, pulling the small wool blanket over her shoulders, holding her with the gentle, protective tenderness of a devoted father.
"Did you catch the puppy?" Matteo asked softly, stroking her dark hair.
"He's too fast," Lily yawned, her brown eyes fluttering closed. "Mother says we have to go inside soon."
I leaned back in my chair, looking at the two of them.
Three years ago, I was a grieving widow trapped in a dark mansion, terrified of the world, serving people who had secretly stolen my happiness. Tonight, I was sitting on the porch of my own home, surrounded by love, security, and a future brighter than I had ever dared to dream.
"Matteo?" Lily murmured, her voice drifting into sleep.
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Do you still have my duck bandage?"
Matteo reached into his breast pocket and pulled out his leather wallet. He opened it, revealing a small clear plastic window. Tucked safely inside, preserved like a precious jewel, was the original yellow cartoon duck bandage Lily had pressed onto his cheek in the dark sub-basement six months ago.
"I keep it with me every single day, Lily," Matteo whispered softly, kissing the top of her head. "To remind me of the little girl who saved my life."
Lily smiled in her sleep, cuddling closer into his chest.
I reached out my hand, and Matteo took it, our fingers intertwining tightly under the warm evening sun.
