Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Victoria spun around, her face twisting in shock as I strode into the dimly lit linen room, Julian following right behind me with his phone held high, recording every second of the confrontation.

"Clara!" Victoria gasped, stepping back against the steel table. "What... what are you doing down here? You should be at your reception!"

"I came to collect my wedding dress," I said coldly, walking straight up to the table and pulling the black plastic bag open. The pristine ivory silk of my original gown shone under the harsh fluorescent lights. "And to collect the evidence of your grand larceny."

Victoria quickly recovered her composure, smoothing down the front of her navy Chanel dress, though her eyes darted frantically toward Julian’s phone.

"Julian, turn that camera off this instant!" Victoria ordered, her voice laced with maternal authority. "This is private hotel business. You have no right to record staff in a restricted area!"

"I am a member of the Board of Directors, Mother," Julian said, his voice cold and devoid of any affection. "And as of three minutes ago, every word you just said about bribing George, burning evidence, and weaponizing the health department against Clara’s family has been uploaded to the Hawthorne secure cloud server."

Victoria’s face went dead white. "You... you wouldn't dare."

"Try me," Julian said, stepping in front of me to shield me from her. "I have stayed quiet for years while you controlled my life, my career, and my choices. But you crossed a line today that you can never uncross."

"Julian, I did this for the family!" Victoria pleaded, her voice rising in panic. "That girl is a nobody! Her family runs a suburban bakery! If you marry her, the board will lose confidence in your leadership! The merger with the Sterling Group will fall apart!"

"My family’s bakery has been serving this city with pride for fifty years," I interjected, stepping up beside Julian. "We built our business on honesty, hard work, and respect—things your money clearly couldn't buy for you."

Victoria glared at me with pure venom. "You think you've won because you put on some antique rags and walked down an aisle? I own this hotel, Clara! I own the board! I can strip Julian of his inheritance before midnight!"

"You don't own the board, Mother," Julian said softly, pulling a official legal document from his inner pocket—the document his father’s lawyers had delivered right before the ceremony. "My father resigned his proxy rights to me this morning. Combined with my grandfather’s trust, I now hold thirty-five percent of the voting shares. You only hold twenty-eight."

Victoria froze. Her breath hitched in her throat as if she had been slapped. "Your father... did what?"

"Dad saw what you did to Clara’s bridal suite this afternoon," Julian revealed, a grim smile touching his lips. "He was the one who alerted me to the health department order. He’s tired of your cruelty, Mother. We all are."

Before Victoria could respond, heavy footsteps echoed down the concrete corridor.

Two uniformed city police officers, accompanied by Detective Marcus from the financial crimes division, stepped into the linen room.

"Mrs. Victoria Hawthorne?" Detective Marcus asked, pulling a leather badge from his coat.

Victoria backed up against the table, her hands trembling. "What is the meaning of this? Do you know who I am?"

"We received an emergency call regarding grand larceny, corporate bribery, and evidence destruction on these premises," Detective Marcus said calmly. "And we were just forwarded a very interesting video recording from Mr. Julian Hawthorne."

"This is a mistake!" Victoria shrieked, her aristocratic facade completely shattering. "George! Tell them you brought the dress down here for cleaning!"

George, the maintenance manager, looked at the police, then at Julian, and immediately threw his hands in the air. "I'm not going to jail for you, Mrs. Hawthorne! She paid me fifty thousand dollars! The transfer is in my bank account!"

Detective Marcus gestured to his officers. "Victoria Hawthorne, you are under arrest for grand larceny, bribery, and obstruction of justice."

As the metal handcuffs clicked around Victoria’s manicured wrists, she looked at me with eyes full of rage and humiliation.

"You ruined my family," she whispered maliciously as the officers turned her toward the door.

I reached up, unpinned the small cream card from my gown, and held it out to her.

"No, Victoria," I said quietly, placing the card into her handcuffed hands. "You did. Know your place."
