Chapter 3 - The Shadow Ledger

I didn't rush to Detective Vance with the video.

In my line of work, jumping to hand over raw intelligence before understanding the full scope of the enemy’s network gets you killed. If Jenna and Lucas were working together, there was a financial infrastructure behind this—a reason why a sister-in-law and an asset manager would execute an entire family on a holiday evening.

I left the hospital through the emergency basement service exit, avoiding the police cruisers parked outside, and caught a cab to a quiet, commercial strip mall four miles away.

Inside a hidden storage unit registered under a dead drop name, I pulled out my tactical laptop, a field medical kit, and an encrypted hard drive containing background files on everyone in Elise’s family.

I ran a deep forensic scrub on Lucas’s offshore corporate accounts using a proprietary intelligence software tool I still had clearance to access.

Within forty-five minutes, the dark web ledger unraveled before my eyes.

Elise’s father had died three years ago, leaving a twelve-million-dollar revocable trust. Under the original terms of the will, the estate was divided equally between Elise and her brother, Martin.

However, eight months ago, Elise had discovered a massive anomaly in the trust’s quarterly audit. Lucas’s firm had quietly liquidated four million dollars of the principal fund, transferring the capital into a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands called Nautilus Global.

The sole director of Nautilus Global was Jenna Miller—Martin’s wife.

Elise hadn't told me yet because she was trying to protect her brother. She had planned to confront Jenna after the holidays, giving her a chance to return the stolen money before taking the evidence to the State Attorney General.

They hadn't just poisoned my family out of hatred. They did it to cover up a multi-million-dollar embezzlement scheme before the annual trust audit on January 1st.

If Elise, Noah, Sophie, and I died at that dinner table, the entire twelve-million-dollar estate—along with my personal three-million-dollar life insurance policy—would automatically default to Martin and Jenna as the sole surviving heirs.

And Martin? My weak-willed, oblivious brother-in-law had no idea his wife was sleeping with Lucas and plotting the mass murder of his own sister and nephew.

My hands shook against the keyboard. The rage inside me was a white-hot furnace, but my mind was operating with terrifying, lethal clarity.

My phone vibrated on the metal table. It was a text from Sarah, the senior pediatric nurse at St. Jude’s.

“David, Noah’s blood pressure is spiking. The doctors are preparing to take him back into emergency surgery to clear his lungs. Where are you?”

May you like

I closed the laptop, grabbed my coat, and slipped my dark tactical knife into my inner belt holster.

It was time to pay my family a visit.
