Chapter 4 - The Midnight Visitor

By Friday night, the storm clouds outside had broken into a howling blizzard, dumping two feet of heavy snow across the Chicago metropolitan area.

In the small, cozy apartment on the West Side, Lily Carter sat at the kitchen table finishing her science project—a detailed model of the solar system made of painted Styrofoam balls—while the radio played soft jazz in the background.

Daniel sat on the sofa, reviewing digital financial audits sent securely from Emma’s office.

Suddenly, a sharp, urgent knock rattled the front door.

Daniel froze. It was 11:30 PM. Nobody visited them at this hour—certainly not delivery drivers or neighbors.

"Dad?" Lily looked up from her solar system model, her dark eyes wide with sudden fear. "Who's that?"

"Stay in the kitchen, Lily," Daniel said softly, standing up and walking toward the entryway. He picked up a heavy metal flashlight from the hall table as a makeshift club.

He peered through the peephole.

Standing in the dimly lit hallway, shivering in the freezing draft, was Caroline—Emma’s executive assistant. Her hair was matted with melting snow, her face pale, and her hands trembling violently as she clutched a leather handbag against her chest.

Daniel instantly unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open.

"Caroline? What on earth—"

"Daniel, thank God," Caroline gasped, stumbling into the warm apartment. She was gasping for air as if she had run miles through the blizzard.

Daniel quickly locked the door behind her and guided her toward the sofa. "Sit down. Here, drink some water."

Lily rushed over with a glass of water, her face filled with concern. "Are you okay, Ms. Caroline?"

Caroline took a sip, her hands shaking so hard the glass clattered against her teeth. She looked up at Daniel, terror etched into every line of her face.

"They broke into the penthouse," Caroline whispered.

Daniel’s blood ran cold. "Who? Richard Sterling?"

"No," Caroline shook her head frantically. "Not Richard. Richard is just a corporate shark. This... this was different. Two men in tactical gear with face masks. They didn't steal jewelry. They didn't take cash."

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a battered, waterproof flash drive, placing it on the coffee table as if it were radioactive.

"They were looking for Emma's personal encryption keys to the R&D server vaults," Caroline continued, her voice breaking. "I was working late in the home office. I heard them coming through the terrace doors, so I hid in the walk-in closet and grabbed her backup drive from the safe before they kicked it open."

"Where is Emma?" Daniel demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, protective register.

"She’s still at the downtown office," Caroline said. "She stayed behind to finalize the federal audit documents with the U.S. Attorney’s office. But Daniel... the men who broke into the penthouse didn't leave when they didn't find the keys. One of them told the other on a radio transmitter..."

She swallowed hard, tears spilling over her lashes.

"They said, 'If she won't hand over the codes voluntarily, make sure she doesn't make it home from the office tonight.'"

Daniel stared at her. The full horror of the situation crashed over him. Richard Sterling and his associates weren't just trying to win a corporate takeover anymore.

They were moving into criminal elimination.

Daniel stood up instantly, grabbing his heavy wool coat from the hall rack.

"Dad?" Lily cried out, grabbing his sleeve. "Where are you going?"

"I have to go downtown," Daniel said, his voice firm, though his heart hammered frantically against his ribs. "I have to get Emma."

"You can't go out there!" Caroline protested. "The expressways are completely shut down due to the blizzard. Nothing is moving!"

Daniel walked over to the closet, pulled out his old winter boots, and slipped them on. He looked at Lily, then back at Caroline.

"My delivery van has four-wheel drive and heavy snow chains," Daniel said, his jaw set in stone. "I used to drive through blizzards delivering medical supplies to rural hospitals when nobody else would move."

He walked over to Lily, kneeling down and kissing the top of her dark curls. "Stay here with Caroline. Lock all the deadbolts. I’m going to bring her home."
