Chapter 5 - Shadows at the Gate

The storm that hit the estate three days later wasn't violent weather—it was a human reckoning.

Josiah’s empire was built on iron discipline, but his recent distraction—his sudden, lingering presence at home, his softened edge around the estate—had not gone unnoticed by his rivals. The Moretti family, a brutal syndicate operating from the northern docks, had smelled weakness.

It happened at midnight.

Willow was sitting in the dim armchair in Mia’s room, reading a book by the soft warm light of a newly installed paper lamp, when the power cut out completely.

The grand mansion fell into pitch blackness.

A second later, the heavy glass of the downstairs conservatory shattered with an explosion that shook the floorboards.

BANG. BANG. BANG.

The distinct, suppressed thuds of gunfire echoed through the lower levels.

Mia bolted upright in bed, a scream dying in her throat as terror gripped her small body. "Willow!"

In a flash, Willow was across the room. The exhaustion, the warmth, the casual life of the past month vanished, replaced by an instinctual, fiercely protective adrenaline.

"Shh. I'm right here," Willow whispered, sliding her arms around Mia and lifting her from the bed.

Rule number three: If the house alarms sound, you take Mia to the safe room behind her closet.

Willow didn't waste a second. She carried Mia into the walk-in closet, pushed aside the rows of coats, and pressed her hand against the hidden steel panel in the wall. The heavy electronic lock hummed, operating on backup battery power, and slid open with a deep metallic hiss.

"In, now," Willow commanded softly, setting Mia inside the small, reinforced steel room equipped with emergency monitors and supplies.

"Are you coming?" Mia cried, her small hand clutching Willow’s wrist.

"I'll be right behind you," Willow lied gently.

She looked at the security monitors mounted inside the safe room wall. The dark infrared feeds showed chaos in the main hallway. Armed men in tactical gear were pushing through the house. And in the center of the crossfire was Josiah.

He fought like a demon possessed. He moved with brutal, lethal precision, disarming an attacker, firing with cold efficiency, protecting the stairway that led to his daughter’s room. But he was outnumbered. A gunman was flanking him from the dark shadow of the upper balcony—stepping into Josiah’s blind spot with a raised weapon aimed directly at his head.

Willow didn't think. She didn't calculate the risk.

She slammed the button to seal Mia inside the safe room.

"Willow, no!" Mia’s voice was cut off as the heavy blast door sealed shut with a violent click.

Willow turned around, grabbed a heavy brass floor lamp from the corner of the bedroom, and sprinted out into the pitch-black corridor.

She reached the balcony just as the gunman lined up his shot on Josiah below.

"Hey!" Willow screamed at the top of her lungs.

The gunman spun around in surprise, but before he could raise his weapon, Willow swung the heavy brass lamp with every ounce of strength in her body. The heavy base struck the man squarely across the side of his helmet with a sickening CRACK.

The man stumbled backward over the wooden railing, losing his balance and plummeting to the hard marble floor below.

Down in the foyer, Josiah heard the commotion, spun around, and watched in utter disbelief as the waitress stood on the upper balcony, panting, holding the broken brass rod like a spear.

"Willow!" Josiah roared, his voice shaking with a terror he had never felt in his entire life—not for himself, but for her.

He cleared the remaining attackers in a fury of calculated violence, sprinting up the grand staircase four steps at a time until he reached her.

He grabbed her shoulders, pulling her roughly against his chest, searching her body frantically for wounds. "Are you hit? Did they touch you? Answer me!"

"I'm... I'm fine," Willow gasped, her hands trembling as they rested against the hard, bulletproof vest across his chest. "Mia is in the safe room. She’s locked in. She’s safe."

Josiah stared down at her face, lit only by the flickering emergency lights. Her eyes were wide, her breathing ragged, her body trembling from the surge of adrenaline—yet she had faced down an armed killer to save his life.

"You absolute fool," Josiah breathed, his voice cracking with intense emotion. "You could have been killed."

"He was going to shoot you!" she yelled back, her composure finally breaking. "You think I was going to let her lose her father?"

May you like

Josiah didn't answer with words.

He pulled her face up with a broad hand and kissed her—a fierce, desperate, electric kiss that swept away the violence, the blood, and the darkness around them. Willow gasped into the kiss, her fingers twisting into the fabric of his shirt, pulling him closer as the world burned around them.
