Chapter 6 - The Blood Protocol

Avery looked through the glass at Commander Kane.
Kane didn't flinch. He looked at Avery and gave her a subtle, barely perceptible nod—the universal military signal for do what you have to do.
Avery turned back to her father.
Arthur Vance’s heart monitor was faltering. The line was flattening out—VFIB imminent.
"Sterling," Avery said softly. "Hand me the defibrillator pads."
"What?" Sterling blinked. "He doesn't need a shock, he needs—"
"HE IS IN VENTRICULAR FIBRILLATION!" Avery roared, her voice echoing through the glass walls. "HAND ME THE PADS OR HE DIES NOW, AND YOUR ENTIRE RETINAL ACCESS IS WORTHLESS!"
Panicked by the prospect of losing his multi-billion-dollar payday, Sterling grabbed the adhesive defibrillator pads and handed them to Avery.
Avery rapidly slapped one pad onto her father’s upper right chest, and the second pad onto his lower left ribs. She reached over to the monitor console, turning the dial to maximum charge—360 Joules.
CHARGING... 100... 200... 360 JOULES.
Moreau frowned, stepping closer to the glass door. "Lennox, what are you doing?"
Avery looked at Moreau through the glass. "I'm clearing the room."
She grabbed the copper grounding wire from the defibrillator unit, jammed it into the conductive fluid spill on the stainless-steel floor beneath Sterling’s feet, and slammed the shock button.
THUMP.
360 Joules of raw electrical current didn't just shock General Vance’s heart—it surged through the wet metal floor of the mobile unit.
Dr. Sterling screamed as thousands of volts passed through his body, throwing him violently backward against the glass wall, knocking him instantly unconscious.
The sudden electrical arc short-circuited the mobile unit’s main power generator, plunging the entire hangar into complete, pitch-black darkness.
"FIRE!" Moreau screamed in the dark.
"NOW, JSOC!" Kane shouted.
In the absolute blackness, Avery’s tactical training kicked in like clockwork. She pulled her night-vision goggles down over her eyes, illuminating the world in bright phosphor green.
She drew her SIG Sauer, stepped out of the ICU door into the pitch-black hangar, and fired three precise shots into the halogen fuel tanks behind Moreau’s mercenaries.
BOOM.
A blinding wall of fire erupted on the far side of the hangar, providing light for Kane and his operators to break free, tackle the disoriented Apex mercenaries, and secure the room in forty-five seconds of absolute, chaotic violence.
Avery didn't watch the fight. She turned back into the dark ICU, grabbed a manual resuscitation bag, attached it to her father’s airway, and began squeezing rhythmically.
"Come on, Dad," Avery whispered, her voice cracking for the first time in years as tears filled her eyes. "Breath. Damn it, breath!"
Underneath her hands, General Vance’s chest rose... and fell.
The cardiac monitor clicked onto battery backup power.

A strong, steady, regular pulse beeped through the dark room.
BEEP... BEEP... BEEP.
