Chapter 3 - THE BOUQUET OF THIRTY THOUSAND

Tessa sat at her tiny kitchen table in her cramped Harlem apartment, staring at the stack of hundred-dollar bills spread across the peeling Formica surface.
She had counted it five times.
Thirty thousand dollars.
Three hundred crisp, new bills.
It was enough to pay off her mother's back-rent at the care facility, buy a winter coat that didn't have holes in the pockets, and pay off her father's lingering collection notices.
"It's dirty money," she whispered to her reflection in the dark kitchen window. "He was a monster. His bodyguard had a gun."
Yet, every time she closed her eyes, she remembered the terrifying man in the dark room. She remembered the sheer, iron power of his frame, the expensive smell of cedar and gin, and the strange, breathless stillness that had settled over him when she rested her forehead against his heart.
He hadn't hurt her. He could have crushed her like an insect, yet he had paid her a fortune for a bundle of hydrangeas and a two-minute nap.
Her phone buzzed loudly on the counter, startling her out of her thoughts.
It was Mr. Lin.
"Tessa!" Mr. Lin screamed into the receiver, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and unbridled joy. "Get down to the market immediately! The market has been sold!"
"Sold?" Tessa blinked. "To who?"
"I don't know! Some corporate conglomerate paid four times the market value in cash this morning!" Mr. Lin yelled. "And their first official order just came through the wire. A single customer wants ten thousand white roses arranged and delivered to a penthouse address by six p.m. today! They requested you specifically to manage the order!"
Tessa gasped. "Me? Why me?"
"Because they offered a five-thousand-dollar bonus to the florist who handles it!" Mr. Lin pleaded. "Get down here, Tessa! We're going to be rich!"
Two hours later, Tessa stood in the center of Lin’s Wholesale Flowers, surrounded by sea upon sea of pristine white roses. The scent was dizzying, overwhelming the smell of damp cardboard and bleach that usually filled the warehouse.
She spent eight hours meticulously trimming thorns, binding stems with cream silk ribbons, and loading forty heavy glass vases into the back of a pristine black delivery van that had been provided by the new owners.
By 5:30 p.m., the van pulled up to the private gates of the Costa Estate in Upper Manhattan—a massive, iron-fenced stone mansion overlooking the Hudson River.
Tessa stepped out of the vehicle, holding a massive armful of white roses, her heart hammering against her ribs.
The double wrought-iron gates swung open automatically.
Standing on the front steps, flanked by two armed guards in dark suits, was Marco.
Marco didn't smile, but his posture was respectful as he bowed his head slightly. "Ms. Reed. Welcome to the Costa Estate."
Tessa stopped near the fountain, clutching the roses like a shield. "Is... is this the residence of the man from the club?"
"Mr. Gael Costa," Marco corrected gently. "And yes. He is waiting for you in the conservatory."
Tessa swallowed hard, her knees trembling beneath her worn jeans. She knew she should drop the flowers and run. She knew that stepping into the lair of a powerful criminal boss was sheer madness.

But as she looked at the magnificent stone arches of the mansion, a strange, undeniable magnetic pull urged her forward.
"Lead the way," Tessa said softly.
