Chapter 7 - The Edge of the Precipice

Claire slammed on her brakes, her sedan coming to a halt twenty yards behind the damaged SUV.
The white vehicle was teetering precariously on the edge of the cliff. The front wheels rested on the muddy shoulder, but the heavy rear end hung in mid-air, suspended only by a section of crushed steel guardrail caught under the front axle.
Smoke poured from the SUV’s crumpled hood. The high-beam headlights shone directly into the thick fog hanging over the ocean drop-off.
Inside, screams of terror echoed through the shattered windows.
"Stay in the car!" Claire ordered Noah and Caleb as she opened her door and stepped out into the howling storm.
"Miss Claire, be careful!" Noah called out.
Claire hurried toward the SUV, keeping her footfalls light to avoid disturbing the fragile balance of the dangling vehicle.
Through the broken side window, she saw Mara struggling frantically to open the driver’s door, but the frame was crushed shut. Evelyn was unbuckled, lying unconscious across the center console, her head bleeding from the impact.
In the back seats, the four younger children—Lily, Grace, and the twin boys—were pinned against their seats, screaming hysterically as every small movement caused the SUV to tilt further back toward the abyss.
CREAK.
A sickening sound of tearing metal echoed over the roar of the wind. The guardrail under the front axle was slipping.
"Don't move!" Claire shouted to the children inside. "Nobody move! If you shift your weight, the car will fall!"
Mara looked through the broken window at Claire, her face twisted in rage and panic. "Get me out of here! Unlock the door from the outside!"
"If I pull your door, the weight shift will drop the rear end!" Claire shouted back. "We have to get the children out through the rear passenger window first!"
"No! Get me out FIRST!" Mara screamed, clawing frantically at the jammed driver's door handle.
"Caleb! Noah! Come here slowly!" Claire called out. "I need you to hold the front bumper! We need weight on the front end!"
Noah and Caleb scrambled out of the sedan. Without hesitation, both boys ran to the front hood of the white SUV and threw their full body weight onto the front bumper, pressing it down against the muddy embankment.
"Good! Hold it right there!" Claire said.
Claire climbed onto the hood of the SUV, reaching through the broken front passenger window. She unbuckled the nearest child—eight-year-old Lily—and carefully pulled her out through the window, handing her down to Caleb, who carried her safely back toward the sedan.
"That's one," Claire panted, her rain-soaked hair sticking to her face. "Grace, you’re next! Come forward slowly!"
One by one, with agonizing precision, Claire pulled Grace and the twins out of the teetering vehicle.
With every child rescued, the rear end of the heavy SUV lifted higher into the air.
SNAP.
The main support bracket of the steel guardrail gave way with a sound like a gunshot.
The SUV slid two inches further back. The rear wheels were now entirely suspended in empty air.
"There's no time!" Evelyn cried out, suddenly regaining consciousness and grabbing Claire’s jacket from inside the cabin. "Pull me out! Pull me out!"
"Let go of me so I can reach you!" Claire yelled, struggling to maintain her footing on the slippery metal hood.
Mara, realizing that Evelyn was blocking her only route of escape, shoved Evelyn violently out of the way, trying to crawl over her to reach the window.
"Get out of my way!" Mara shrieked.
"Mara, no!" Evelyn screamed as Mara’s weight shifted violently toward the right side of the vehicle.
The delicate equilibrium was broken.
The front tires of the SUV lost their grip on the muddy embankment. The vehicle began to slide backward over the cliff edge.
"Claire! Jump!" Caleb screamed from the road.
Claire launched herself off the hood of the SUV, landing heavily on the muddy asphalt just as the white vehicle tipped past the point of no return.
With a horrifying metallic screech, the SUV plunged backward into the foggy abyss.
Noah covered his eyes, screaming.
Seconds later, a distant, muffled explosion echoed from the jagged rocks below, followed by the roaring splash of the ocean waves.
Claire lay on the cold asphalt, catching her breath, her heart pounding like a jackhammer.
Noah ran to her side, throwing his arms around her neck, sobbing uncontrollably. "You saved them... you saved all of us..."
May you like
Claire wrapped her arms tightly around the trembling boy, looking back toward the four rescued children sitting safely inside her car, and then at the broken guardrail dropping off into the black sea.
In the distance, through the heavy rain, the red and blue flashing lights of multiple emergency vehicles finally appeared, winding their way up the coastal highway toward Blackwood Point.
