The winter of 2026 drew to a close with a brilliant, long summer that turned the valley of the Columbia River into a vast sea of gold and green. The court documents were sealed in the historical archives, the townhouse in the city had been sold to pay off every remaining cent of the corporate liabilities, and the name of Eric and Vanessa Whitman had been completely scrubbed from the local registries.
I sat on the wide cedar porch steps of my childhood home, the evening sun warm and gold against my face. My duty uniform was gone, replaced by a comfortable flannel shirt and jeans, my service weapon resting safely inside the biometric locker in the library.
Mom sat in her favorite rocking chair behind me, the red cashmere robe draped over her lap—clean, pressed, and smelling of lavender instead of the stale bourbon that had stained it months ago.
