Chapter 3 - The Eviction

By 11:30 AM, the snow at 142 Elm Drive had turned into a muddy slush.

A black SUV pulled up to the curb, followed closely by two marked police cruisers. I sat in the passenger seat of my father’s car, watching my home—the house I had spent two years decorating, cleaning, and turning into a sanctuary for my daughter.

Beside me, Dad shifted into park and turned off the engine. "Ready, Clara?"

"I'm ready," I said, my voice firmer than it had been in months.

We stepped out into the crisp air. Sheriff's Deputy Martinez met us at the walkway. "Mrs. Miller, we've secured the perimeter. Mr. Miller and his mother were notified. They are inside attempting to pack."

As we approached the porch, the front door swung open. Margaret Miller marched out, wrapped in her expensive mink coat, her face twisted in rage. Behind her came Andrew, looking disheveled, carrying two oversized suitcases.

"You ungrateful little viper!" Margaret shrieked, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at me. "How dare you bring the police to our family home! After everything Andrew has done for you!"

"Your family home?" Dad’s voice cut through the air like a steel blade. He stepped forward, his tall frame looming over Margaret. The old woman instinctively took a step back, her mouth snapping shut.

"Margaret," Dad said smoothly, his tone icy. "Three days ago, you packed my granddaughter's clothes into trash bags and threw her into a snowstorm. If you speak to my daughter in that tone again, I will have the Sheriff arrest you for harassment on the spot."

"She's lying!" Andrew shouted, pushing past his mother. "Clara left voluntarily! She walked out!"

Deputy Martinez pulled out his tablet. "Mr. Miller, we have outdoor security camera footage pulled from the neighboring house showing your mother tossing black contractor bags onto the lawn while you stood in the doorway and watched. The judge saw it two hours ago. Don't dig your hole any deeper."

Andrew’s face drained of all color. He glared at me, his eyes wide with betrayal—the sickening audacity of a predator playing the victim.

"Clara, please," Andrew pleaded, his voice dropping into that manipulative, smooth tone he used whenever he wanted to control me. "Let’s talk about this privately. You're being irrational. Think about Lily! You're ruining our family!"

"Lily is warm," I replied, standing straight, meeting his gaze without flinching. "She's at my father's house, eating pancakes. Something she couldn't do while you were entertaining your mistress in our bed."

"She's not my mistress!" Andrew yelled out. "Vanessa is—"

"A mistake," Dad finished the sentence for him. "And a very expensive one."

Deputy Martinez checked his watch. "11:58 AM, Mr. Miller. Hand over the keys, electronic garage clickers, and vacate the property."

Andrew fumbled in his pocket, tossing the keys onto the snowy steps. "You think you won, Clara? You think your old man can protect you forever? My accounts are frozen, but my lawyers will dismantle this order by tomorrow morning! You won't get a single dime of alimony!"

"We don't want your alimony, Andrew," Dad said, stepping past him to pick up the keys. "We want full restitution for stolen funds, total forfeiture of this property, and full legal and physical custody of Lily. And by the way... check your mail tomorrow."

"What mail?!" Andrew demanded.

"The demand letter from the Delaware Private Investment Trust," Dad replied with a faint, deadly smile. "Calling the $480,000 note due in full. Seven days, Andrew. Start counting."

Without another word, Dad unlocked the front door and held it open for me.

I walked past Andrew and Margaret, stepping back into my home. As the heavy wooden door slammed shut behind us, locking them out in the cold, I heard Margaret screech in frustration and Andrew pound his fist against the wood once before the police ordered them off the property.

Inside, the house was silent. The scent of Vanessa’s heavy perfume still hung in the foyer, mixed with stale champagne.

"First tactical objective secured," Dad said quietly, setting his keys on the entry table. "Now, we clean house."
