Chapter 3 - The Frame Job

The room went dead silent. The faint hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen sounded deafening in the heavy quiet that followed.

Daniel stared at the paper in Officer Miller’s hand, his brow furrowed in utter confusion. "What? That's impossible. Clara didn't buy that."

Officer Miller looked at me, his calm demeanor shifting into something much more guarded and analytical. "Mrs. Pierce, do you recognize this receipt?"

"No!" I said, stepping forward, my heart hammering against my ribs. "I’ve never bought industrial drain cleaner in my life! I was at work all day on December 22nd!"

"This receipt shows your debit card number, ending in 4092," Officer Hays noted, checking his tablet. "The transaction occurred at 2:15 PM at the Westside Builder's Supply."

"My debit card was in my purse all day," I insisted, tears of frustration pricking my eyes. "Wait... on December 21st, Richard came over to 'help' fix the leaky faucet in our garage. My purse was sitting on the kitchen island while I was in the backyard with Emma. He must have taken my card, noted the numbers, or taken the physical card and put it back later!"

Officer Miller signaled to the forensics team. "Collect the receipt. We’ll need security camera footage from Westside Builder's Supply for December 22nd at 2:15 PM."

"Check the footage!" Daniel demanded, stepping between me and the officers, his body rigid with protective instinct. "Check the cameras right now! My wife spent the entire day on Christmas morning trying to save our daughter's face while my father stood there sipping coffee! You cannot honestly think she had anything to do with this!"

"Mr. Pierce, we are executing a thorough investigation," Officer Miller said smoothly, though his eyes remained fixed on me. "Given the evidence found on the premises and the paper trail, we have to follow standard protocol. Mrs. Pierce, I need you to come down to the station to give a formal statement and allow us to process your hands for chemical residue."

"I’ll come," I said without hesitation. "I will do whatever you need. Just tell me Emma is safe at the hospital."

"There are two uniformed officers stationed outside her room at Children's Memorial," Officer Miller assured me. "No one enters that room without clearance."

Ten minutes later, I was sitting in the back of a police cruiser, watching our home disappear into the snowstorm behind us. The holiday lights strung along the neighborhood eaves glowed in bright reds and greens, mocking the horror that had unfolded inside our living room.

At the police station, I was brought into a small, sterile interview room. A female detective named Detective Sarah Lin took over the questioning. She was methodical, recording every word, asking precise questions about my relationship with Richard, the incident at the bar six months ago, and the exact sequence of events on Christmas morning.

"He hated me because I saw through him," I explained, leaning across the metal table, my hands tightly clasped. "Richard Pierce is a man who demands complete control over his family. When his wife died ten years ago, he took over Daniel's life. When Daniel married me, Richard tried to dictate how we raised Emma. When I found out he left Emma alone in his truck outside a tavern for over forty minutes, I set a boundary. He couldn't handle being told no."

Detective Lin made a note in her file. "And you believe he formulated a plan to poison a skincare set, frame you using your stolen financial information, and disfigure his own granddaughter just to destroy your standing in the family?"

"Yes," I said fiercely. "Because if Emma was hurt by a product bought on my card, Richard could paint me as an unfit, dangerous mother. He thought I wouldn't notice the chemical reaction until it was too late. He thought I would be the one blamed!"

A knock sounded on the interview room door. Officer Hays stepped inside and handed Detective Lin a printed sheet of paper.

Detective Lin scanned the document, her eyebrows rising slightly. She looked up at me. "Mrs. Pierce, our officers just retrieved the security footage from Westside Builder's Supply from December 22nd at 2:15 PM."

"And?" I held my breath.

"The individual who purchased the industrial drain cleaner was an elderly male wearing a brown trench coat, a flat cap, and sunglasses," Detective Lin revealed. "The height and build match Richard Pierce. Furthermore, the cashier recalled the customer because he insisted on paying with a card that didn't match his name, claiming he was buying supplies for his daughter-in-law."

A massive wave of relief washed over me, taking my breath away. "It was him. He deliberately used my card to create a paper trail."

Detective Lin closed her notepad and stood up. "Mrs. Pierce, you are free to go. We have officially issued a felony warrant for the arrest of Richard Pierce for attempted murder, aggravated child abuse, and identity fraud."

As I stepped out into the station lobby, Daniel was waiting for me. He looked exhausted, his eyes bloodshot, but when he saw me, he held out his arms. I ran into his embrace, burying my face against his neck as the heavy dread finally began to lift.

"She’s awake, Clara," Daniel whispered into my hair, holding me tight. "The doctor said the swelling on her face is stabilizing. She’s asking for her mom."

"Take me to her," I sobbed. "Take me to our baby."
