Chapter 10 - Built to Last

As twilight fell over the city, turning the sky into a breathtaking canvas of deep indigo, magenta, and gold, the guests began to depart.

Grant helped Evelyn clean up the patio, carrying folded chairs to the basement storage and gathering used paper plates with quiet efficiency.

"You don't have to do that, Grant," Evelyn said, coming out onto the porch with two glasses of lemonade. "The catering staff will clean up in the morning."

"I know," Grant said, setting down a stack of folded napkins and taking one of the glasses with a grateful smile. "I like being useful."

He walked to the edge of the wooden deck, looking out over the quiet garden where Sophie was sitting on the grass with her best friend, laughing over photos on her phone.

"She’s extraordinary, Evelyn," Grant said softly, his voice full of quiet awe. "You raised an incredible young woman."

"We raised her, Grant," Evelyn corrected gently. "You were there for the first twelve years. And you're here now."

Grant looked at Evelyn, his eyes full of a deep, mature respect that had taken a lifetime of suffering to acquire.

"Thank you," Grant said quietly. "For not destroying me when you had every right to. For letting me back into her life."

Evelyn leaned against the wooden railing, looking out toward the distant silhouette of the city skyline, where the glass peak of Carter Tower sparkled like a diamond against the evening stars.

"Holding onto hatred is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die, Grant," Evelyn said smoothly. "I didn't rebuild my life to get revenge on you. I rebuilt it because I deserved to be happy. And so did Sophie."

Grant nodded slowly, understanding the profound truth of her words. "You won, Evelyn. In every way that matters."

Evelyn smiled—a soft, beautiful, completely peaceful smile.

"It was never a game, Grant. It was just life. And for the first time... we're both living it right."

From the garden, Sophie called out, her voice ringing clear and bright through the cool evening air. "Mom! Dad! Come look at the stars! The sky is completely clear!"

Grant looked at Evelyn. Evelyn offered him a warm nod.

Together, side by side, they walked down the wooden steps of the porch, stepping out into the garden to join their daughter beneath the vast, shining sky.
