Chapter 8 - Cornering the Monsters

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel in Chicago was draped in gold and crystal. Over three hundred investors, corporate executives, and journalists gathered under the chandelier lights for the Pierce Enterprises annual gala.

Harold Pierce stood at the center of the room in a tailored tuxedo, holding a glass of champagne, laughing with international investors. Beside him stood Victoria, draped in diamonds and a ice-blue silk gown, wearing her signature cold, aristocratic smile.

They believed they had won.

From the balcony above, hidden behind velvet curtains, I watched them. My chest still burned from my healing ribs, but under my dark green velvet dress—chosen carefully to conceal my medical bandages—I felt stronger than I ever had in my life.

Beside me stood David in a sharp black suit, and Arthur, holding a briefcase loaded with original title deeds, bank records, and DNA evidence proving my lineage.

At 9:00 PM, Harold took the stage at the front of the ballroom, stepping up to the podium amid warm applause.

"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests," Harold began, his voice booming through the sound system. "Tonight, we celebrate twenty-five years of Pierce Enterprises. Built on innovation, integrity, and relentless dedication..."

"And stolen legacy!" a voice rang out over the microphone.

The room fell instantly silent.

David stepped onto the stage from the side entrance, holding a wireless microphone. The crowd gasped as several long-time board members recognized the face of the son who had 'disappeared' a decade ago.

Harold’s face drained of all color. "David? You... what are you doing here? Security!"

"Security won't save you tonight, Harold," Arthur Vance's voice boomed as he walked down the main aisle of the ballroom, flanked by Marcus Sterling and four uniformed Federal Marshals.

The crowd erupted into hushed whispers. Reporters began flashing cameras rapidly.

"This is a private corporate event!" Victoria shouted, her calm facade shattering into frantic rage. "Get these people out of here!"

I stepped out from behind the velvet curtain at the top of the grand staircase, stepping slowly and deliberately down the steps into the center of the room.

Harold stared at me as if he were looking at a ghost. "Lauren?"

"You told the doctors you’d come if I died, Harold," I said, my voice echoing off the high ceilings as I reached the stage. "Well, I survived. And I'm here to collect what belongs to the Vance family."
