Chapter 6 - The Volkov Escalation

While the legal trap had closed firmly around Victoria and Julian, the dangerous ripples of their desperate financial schemes were far from settled.

Two days after the arraignment, my father and I sat in the private conference room of Vance, Sterling & Cross on the top floor of a Midtown skyscraper. The Manhattan skyline stretched out behind us under a slate-gray sky.

Marcus placed a thick red folder on the glass table between us.

"The federal court frozen accounts solved the domestic legal issues, Arthur," Marcus said, his face grave. "But we have a severe security problem. The Russian private equity firm—the Volkov Syndicate—didn't get their twelve million dollar payout."

I looked up, my hand instinctively tightening around my tea cup. "Are they coming after Julian's assets?"

"Julian doesn't have assets anymore, Clara," Marcus replied. "The federal government seized the Westchester estate, the luxury vehicles, and the offshore accounts under civil forfeiture. The Volkovs know that the only tangible asset left standing in the entire wreckage... is your penthouse in the Metropolitan Tower."

My father’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "The Volkovs have no legal claim to Unit 14B."

"Legal claims don't matter to men like Nikolai Volkov, Arthur," Marcus warned, pulling out a printout of an encrypted message intercepted by federal intelligence. "Nikolai operates out of Brighton Beach. He’s a former intelligence contractor turned illegal asset recovery specialist. He views Unit 14B as his collateral. His men were spotted surveying Clara’s building two hours ago."

A cold sweat broke out on the back of my neck. "They think if they intimidate me, I’ll transfer the air-rights to them to settle Julian's debt?"

"They don't know who her father is," Arthur said softly, standing up and walking to the floor-to-ceiling window. He looked out over the city with the cold, calculating vision of a general inspecting a battlefield. "Nikolai Volkov thinks he is dealing with a helpless widow whose husband is in prison."

Arthur turned back around, a chilling smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "Marcus, set up a meeting."

Marcus blinked, stunned. "A meeting? Arthur, Nikolai Volkov doesn't negotiate with private attorneys. He uses muscle."

"He doesn't negotiate with standard attorneys," Arthur corrected, reaching into his suit jacket and pulling out a small black leather book with a gold crest embossed on the cover. "Call Nikolai’s legal counsel, Viktor Reznick. Tell him Arthur Vance wants to discuss the resolution of the Sterling debt over dinner at the Russian Tea Room tonight at eight."

Marcus stared at the black book, his eyes widening in shock. "The Geneva Accord files? You still have leverage on Reznick?"

"Viktor Reznick owes his US citizenship and his law license to a quiet favor I did for him in Zurich twenty years ago," Arthur said, his voice dripping with smooth, lethally controlled power. "He will bring Nikolai to the table. And Clara will be sitting right beside me."

"Dad, no," I interjected, standing up. "It’s too dangerous! If these men are criminals—"

"Clara," my father said, stepping over and holding my face gently in his hands, his eyes shining with fierce pride. "You stood up to Victoria Sterling in a courtroom full of reporters. You looked Julian in the eye and broke his spirit. You are not going to hide in the shadows while old men gamble with your future. You are a Vance. Tonight, we finish this."
