Chapter 5 - The Legal Shield

By noon on Monday, the Vance family legal machine had launched its counter-offensive. While Ethan, Marissa, and Caleb were being held without bail, a prominent defense attorney named Evelyn Sterling arrived at the courthouse, flanked by a team of public relations specialists.
Evelyn Sterling was a sleek, ruthless woman who specialized in protecting corrupt public officials. She held a press conference on the steps of the courthouse, her voice carrying a polished, unshakeable confidence that broadcasted across every local news station.
“The accusations against my clients are nothing more than a coordinated smear campaign by a disgruntled spouse and a disgruntled, retired officer with a personal vendetta,” Sterling announced into the microphones. “The digital recordings were obtained illegally without a warrant, the storage locker evidence was recovered through an unlawful search based on coercion, and Mrs. Ava Vance has a documented history of mental instability that raises serious questions about her credibility as a witness.”
I sat in Nolan’s kitchen, watching the broadcast on a small television. The local news anchor was already showing a digital copy of the forged medical records Ethan had created, questioning whether the case would even make it to a grand jury.
“She’s good,” I muttered, my grip tightening on my coffee mug. “She’s turning the public against me before I can even stand on the witness stand.”
“She’s playing a short game, Ava,” a calm, authoritative voice said from the doorway.
Julian Cross walked into the kitchen, carrying a massive leather portfolio. Julian was a legendary federal prosecutor who had spent the last decade tearing down organized crime syndicates and public corruption rings. Nolan had called him in as a personal favor.
“Evelyn Sterling can manipulate the local media all she wants,” Julian said, sitting down across from me and opening his file. “But she can't manipulate a federal judge under the RICO Act. The moment Caleb Vance used his official deputy status to suppress the initial investigation into Clara Vance’s death, this became a case of organized criminal enterprise utilizing public office.”
Julian looked at me, his sharp blue eyes filled with an iron certainty. “Ava, I’m taking over this case as a Special Federal Prosecutor. We are going to bypass the local grand jury entirely. I’ve already secured a federal indictment for interstate wire fraud and civil rights violations under color of law.”
“Can they use my forged medical records against me?” I asked.
“We’ve already executed a federal subpoena for the original servers of the clinic Ethan claimed diagnosed you,” Julian explained, a slow, dangerous smile touching his lips. “The clinic’s chief administrator has already turned state’s evidence. He admitted that Caleb Vance paid him twenty thousand dollars to insert those fraudulent records into the database three weeks ago. We have the digital footprint, the IP logs, and the bank wire transfers.”

Julian leaned forward, resting his hands on the table. “Evelyn Sterling thinks she’s defending a family dispute. She doesn't realize she’s standing on a train track, and the federal locomotive is already moving at full speed. I need you to do one thing for me, Ava. I need you to stay strong, keep your head high, and look your husband in the eyes when we enter that federal courtroom tomorrow morning.”
“I’ve been under his water for a year, Mr. Cross,” I said, my voice steady and clear. “I’m not afraid of his shadow anymore.”
