Chapter 4 - THE AMBUSH

Thursday morning arrived with heavy rain. I drove Jessica’s car to a local coffee shop to meet a private investigator Victoria had hired to gather security footage from the bank where the loan was processed.

As I walked out of the café, holding a cardboard tray of coffees, a figure stepped out from behind a parked SUV, blocking my path to the car.

It was Brandon.

He looked entirely different from the arrogant man who had thrown a rag at my face. He looked disheveled, frantic, and wild-eyed. He was holding a cheap bouquet of supermarket roses.

“Melanie,” he breathed, taking a step toward me.

I immediately took three steps back, my hand instinctively reaching into my coat pocket to press the record button on my phone.

“Stay away from me, Brandon,” I warned.

“Please, just listen!” he begged, dropping the flowers onto the wet pavement. “My mom is out of control, I know. I’m sorry about the rag. I was just stressed! But you can’t do this to us. You can’t keep the money.”

“The money in my name?” I asked, my voice deliberately loud for the recording. “The money you claimed was a gift?”

“You know it wasn’t a gift!” he hissed, stepping closer, looking paranoid. “It’s a loan, Melanie! A bridge loan! If we don’t pay back the first installment by Friday, the creditors are going to foreclose on my parents' house! We need your $200,000 to cover the margins!”

He had just confessed. On tape.

“So you used my parents' life savings to cover a fraudulent loan you took out in their names?” I asked, playing dumb to keep him talking.

Brandon ran a hand through his wet hair, groaning in frustration. “It wasn’t fraud! We were going to pay it back eventually! We just needed your parents' collateral to get the cash to save my dad’s business! You’re my wife, Melanie! We share everything! Just wire the money to my account right now, and we can go home and be a family.”

I stared at the pathetic, cowardly man standing in the rain.

“I am not your wife,” I said softly. “I was your mark. And you were foolish enough to think I was stupid.”

I stepped around him, unlocked the car, and got inside. He slammed his fists against the window, screaming obscenities as I drove away.

I immediately sent the audio file to Victoria.

Her reply came one minute later: “Checkmate.”
