CHAPTER 2: THE NAME THEY NEVER CHECKED

The conversation above me shifted again.

Monica’s voice sharpened.

“And the Carter connection? Any risk?”

Ethan scoffed.

“She’s just Emma Carter. Common name. No one important.”

Vanessa agreed.

“She works in admin. I checked her records myself.”

A pause.

Then Ethan added:

“She said her father was ‘in business.’ That could mean anything.”

I almost smiled in the dark.

Anything.

If only they had Googled harder.

Vanessa stood up.

“Once the apartment is transferred, we move funds through the consultancy channel. No trace.”

Ethan nodded.

“It’s already set.”

That was it.

That was the structure.

Fraud disguised as family.

Manipulation disguised as love.

Inheritance theft disguised as marriage.

I slowly slid my phone closer under the bed.

The recording indicator was still red.

Good.

Let them keep talking.

Because every word was becoming evidence.

Monica suddenly asked,

“What if she contacts lawyers?”

Vanessa didn’t hesitate.

“We isolate her first.”

Ethan added smoothly.

“We’ll say she’s emotionally unstable. Possibly depressed. I’ll act concerned. That always works.”

Vanessa’s voice softened.

“She trusts you.”

Ethan smiled.

“She loves me.”

A pause.

Then Vanessa said something that chilled even me.

“Love is just access.”

Silence.

That line stayed in the air longer than the others.

Ethan exhaled.

“After tonight, she’ll have no access to anything that matters.”

Above me, the bed shifted as he stood.

I heard him walk toward the bathroom.

Vanessa followed him out of earshot.

Monica remained on speaker.

Alone.

And for the first time—

quiet.

I adjusted my position slowly.

My wedding dress rustled beneath me.

Then I saw something under the bed frame.

A small box.

Left behind by hotel staff.

Inside—

copies.

Printed documents.

Pre-signed financial agreements.

My name.

My signature.

Forged.

Not just planned betrayal.

Executed paperwork.

My pulse slowed.

Because now it wasn’t just emotional.

It was legal war.

And I had been sitting under the battlefield.

I reached forward.

Took photos.

Every page.

Every signature.

Every lie.

Then I heard Ethan returning.

I froze again.

May you like

But now—

I was no longer just hiding.I was collecting.
