Chapter 8 - The Fall of Coronado

Three months later, the legal hammer fell with devastating finality.

The federal trial for embezzlement and grand larceny concluded in a downtown Chicago courthouse. Preston Rhodes was convicted on eleven counts of wire fraud, tax evasion, and corporate embezzlement. He was sentenced to twelve years in a federal penitentiary and ordered to pay $12 million in restitution.

As he was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs and an orange jumpsuit, press cameras flashed frantically from every angle. His name, once synonymous with corporate power, was now a warning tale across Wall Street.

Brooke Ellison fared little better. Though she avoided extended prison time by cooperating with federal prosecutors, her reputation was entirely destroyed. Blacklisted from every major firm in the country, saddled with massive legal debt, and forced to surrender every gift, bag, and piece of jewelry Preston had bought her, she quietly left Chicago in shame, penniless and forgotten.

On the day the news of Preston's sentencing made national headlines, Evelyn stood in the quiet sanctuary of the Lake Forest mansion’s garden.

The afternoon sun cast a warm golden glow across the rolling green lawn. Children’s laughter echoed through the air as five-year-old Henry ran across the grass, kicking a soccer ball toward the trees.

Samuel Archer walked down the stone patio steps, holding a legal folder.

"It’s official, Evelyn," Samuel said quietly. "The divorce decree is absolute. The restitution orders have been processed, and the Coronado villa has been sold at auction. Every single dollar stolen from Whitaker Development has been restored to Henry's trust."

Evelyn took a deep breath of the fresh spring air. She felt no lingering pain, no bitterness—only a profound, weightless freedom.

"Thank you, Samuel," she said softly. "For everything."

"Your father would be immeasurably proud of you, Evelyn," Samuel smiled warmly. "You didn't just protect his empire. You proved who the true sovereign of this family really is."

Evelyn looked out at her son, who was waving at her enthusiastically from the middle of the lawn.

"Mama! Look how far I kicked it!" Henry shouted happily.

Evelyn smiled—a genuine, warm smile that filled her heart completely. "I see it, sweetheart! You're getting stronger every day!"
