Chapter 5 - The Trap Cracks

The boardroom descended into absolute chaos.

Board members scrambled for the blue folders, flipping frantically through the forensic audit pages, the wire transfer records, and the metallurgy test results provided by David Chen.

"Is this real?!" Mr. Davis roared, slamming his fist onto the table and glaring at Jason. "Jason! Is this true?! Did you put uncertified steel in the Horizon build?!"

"It’s a lie! She forged those documents!" Jason yelled, pointing a frantic finger at me. "She’s trying to destroy this company out of revenge because I left her!"

"The wire transfers originated from your personal IP address at your private residence, Mr. Whitlock," David Chen stated calmly, leaning toward his microphone. "Furthermore, the Panamanian account recipient bears the verified signature of Ms. Megan Vance. The Department of Justice financial crimes unit has already been provided with certified copies."

At the mention of the Department of Justice, Megan let out a loud sob, falling back into a chair, her face buried in her hands.

"Megan! Shut up!" Margaret shouted, turning on her with venomous fury. "Keep your mouth shut!"

"She can't help you now, Margaret," I said softly. "None of you can help each other. The trap was set the day you decided that greed was worth more than human lives."

Jason looked around the room, reading the faces of the board members he had manipulated for years. Every single one of them was looking at him with disgust and horror. His legal team was already stepping back toward the exit doors, putting physical distance between themselves and a client who was clearly heading to federal prison.

"Emily..." Jason gasped, his arrogant posture completely crumbling. He walked slowly down the length of the table toward me, his hands held out in a desperate plea. "Emily, please... think about what we had. We were married for seven years! We built this together! You loved my father! If you do this, you'll ruin his name! You'll ruin the family name!"

"You ruined the family name the day you betrayed your father's trust, Jason," I answered, looking at him with neither hatred nor affection—only profound pity. "Your father didn't give me this company to save you. He gave it to me to save his legacy from you."

The double glass doors of the boardroom opened once again.

This time, it wasn't lawyers or executives who entered. Four uniformed agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by two officers from the Los Angeles Police Department, marched into the room.

The lead agent, a tall woman with a sharp badge pinned to her belt, stepped toward the table.

"Jason Whitlock? Megan Vance?" the agent announced loudly. "We have warrants for your arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and criminal endangerment."

Margaret began screaming wildly, grabbing the agent’s arm, only to be firmly guided back by a police officer. "You can't arrest my son! Do you know who we are?! We are the Whitlocks!"

"Not anymore, Mrs. Whitlock," Leonard Harris remarked softly from my side.

I watched silently as metal handcuffs clicked cold and sharp around Jason’s wrists. For a brief second, as he was turned toward the door, his eyes met mine.

He looked small, broken, and utterly ruined. The polished mask he had worn his entire life had finally fallen off, leaving behind nothing but the empty shell of a man who had traded his soul for worthless paper.
