Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Empire

The next two weeks saw the systematic deconstruction of Connor Fleming’s life.
He filed for an emergency DNA paternity test, and the results leaked to the press within forty-eight hours: 0% probability of paternity. Liam was not his son.
The revelation triggered a chain reaction. Connor immediately halted all financial support to Melinda, kicking her out of his penthouse mansion. But Melinda wasn't a woman to go down without a fight. She hired a high-profile family lawyer and filed a massive lawsuit against Marcus Vance for paternity and retroactive child support, while simultaneously suing Connor for emotional distress and breach of implied contract.
The legal battle became a public circus. Marcus Vance’s wife immediately filed for a high-net-worth divorce, freezing all of Marcus’s assets, which in turn collapsed several real estate deals he was finalizing with Connor’s firm.
Without Marcus’s capital, Connor’s real estate empire began to crater. Investors panicked, pulling their funding from his luxury developments.
One evening, after a long shift, I found Melinda waiting for me in the hospital parking garage. She looked unrecognizable. The designer clothes were gone, replaced by a faded sweatshirt and jeans. Her hair was greasy, pinned back hastily. She was standing near my car, holding a paper cup of stale coffee.
"Kirsten," she said as I approached. "Please, don't run away."
I stopped a few feet from her, my hand tightly gripping my car keys. "I have nothing to say to you, Melinda."
"I just need you to listen for two minutes," she sobbed, tears cutting tracks through her heavy makeup. "I'm losing everything. Connor took the car, the apartment, the accounts. He’s trying to get my real estate license revoked for ethical violations. Marcus won't even return my lawyer’s calls. I have a one-year-old baby and no way to pay rent next month."
"And you came to me?" I asked, incredulous. "The woman whose marriage you destroyed? The woman you humiliated in public just two weeks ago?"
"You're a doctor! You're supposed to be compassionate!" she cried out, stepping closer. "You know what it's like to want a family so badly it drives you crazy! When Connor started complaining about you, when he came to my office looking for comfort... I saw a chance. I was lonely, Kirsten. I was broke. I didn't plan for it to be Marcus’s baby, I swear. It was a mistake. But when I got pregnant, I knew Connor would take care of me forever if he thought it was his."
"You used my pain as a blueprint for your scam," I said, my voice ice cold. "You sat across from me at cafes, listening to me cry about my failed IVF cycles, taking notes on exactly how to manipulate my husband. You didn't just sleep with him, Melinda. You dissected my life and wore it like a coat."
"I'm sorry," she whispered, dropping to her knees on the cold concrete of the garage. "Please, Kirsten. Talk to Julian Vance. Tell him to get Marcus to settle out of court. Just enough for me to take care of Liam. He’s an innocent baby."
I looked down at her, feeling a strange sensation. It wasn't anger anymore. It wasn't satisfaction. It was just a profound sense of clean, unadulterated closure.

"Liam is innocent," I said, stepping past her and unlocking my car. "And because he is innocent, the state will ensure his biological father pays child support eventually. But I will not lift a finger to help you escape the consequences of your own choices. You choose your actions, Melinda. You don't get to choose your consequences."
I got into my car, started the engine, and drove away, leaving her kneeling in the rearview mirror.
