Chapter 7 - The Reckoning in Manhattan

Three days later, the federal courthouse in lower Manhattan was surrounded by bank after bank of television news trucks, satellite dishes, and hundreds of shouting reporters.

The news of the arrest of Marcus Arden, Celeste Arden, and Dr. Malcolm Voss had sent shockwaves through Wall Street and the New York social registry. Headlines blared across every major newspaper: VALE MERIDIAN HEIRESS ATTEMPTED MURDER; HEDGE FUND TYCOON CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED POISONING AND EMBEZZLEMENT.

Inside the grand marble hallway of the third-floor appellate courtroom, Marcus Arden sat at the defense table dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit, his silver hair unkempt, his wrists secured by heavy steel handcuffs. Beside him sat Celeste, wearing a plain gray prison uniform, her face devoid of makeup, her eyes staring blankly at the polished floorboards.

At the prosecution table sat the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, accompanied by Adrian Vale and Naomi Carter.

Naomi wore a tailored navy silk suit—a gift delivered to her suite by Evelyn’s personal dressmaker—her hair swept back into an elegant, commanding knot. She sat beside Adrian, not as an employee, but as the newly confirmed co-trustee of the Vale Estate.

The presiding judge, Honorable Katherine Mercer, slammed her wooden gavel down onto the block.

“We are here for the bail review and formal arraignment of Marcus Arden and Celeste Arden,” Judge Mercer declared. “The charges filed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation include Attempted First-Degree Murder, Wire Fraud, Corporate Espionage, Extortion, and Conspiracy to Administer Lethal Controlled Substances. Defense counsel, state your plea.”

Marcus’s high-priced corporate defense attorney stood up nervously. “Your Honor, my clients maintain their absolute innocence. The allegations stem from misconstrued domestic misunderstandings and unreliable recordings illegally obtained by a household servant—”

“I’m going to stop you right there, Counselor,” Judge Mercer interrupted coldly. She opened a thick blue folder sitting on her bench. “I have here a sworn affidavit from the Chief Medical Examiner of New York, alongside forensic digital evidence provided by the FBI Cyber Division.”

Judge Mercer looked down over her half-moon spectacles at Marcus Arden.

“Furthermore, federal agents opened Safety Deposit Box 408 at the Manhattan Treasury Vault yesterday morning,” the Judge continued. “Inside, they discovered the original corporate ledgers from twelve years ago, detailing a systematic twenty-million-dollar embezzlement scheme orchestrated by Marcus Arden, accompanied by forensic physical evidence linking Mr. Arden to the vehicular homicide of Sarah Carter in 2014.”

Celeste turned her head slowly, looking at her father in absolute, horrified shock. “Dad...? What is she talking about? You said Sarah Carter died in an accident!”

Marcus didn't answer. He slumped forward in his seat, his hands trembling violently against the wooden table.

“In light of the overwhelming physical, digital, and financial evidence,” Judge Mercer declared, her voice ringing off the stone walls, “and considering the severe flight risk and danger posed to the public, bail is DENIED for both defendants. They will remain in federal custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center pending trial.”

The judge struck her gavel. “Court is adjourned.”

As federal marshals moved in to grab Marcus and Celeste to escort them back to the holding cells, Celeste looked across the well of the court.

Her eyes locked onto Naomi.

For the first time, Celeste didn't look angry. She looked utterly broken, terrified, and small.

Naomi stood up slowly, stepping to the wooden railing that separated the gallery from the court. She looked down at Celeste—the woman who three days ago had tried to crush an aging woman’s life beneath a embroidered down pillow.

“You said I clean up other people’s trash, Miss Arden,” Naomi said, her voice carrying clearly across the quiet courtroom. “You were right. And today, the trash has been removed permanently.”

Celeste was dragged away weeping, her father shuffling beside her in silence, their grand lineage, their wealth, and their social standing completely shattered into dust.
