Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Path

Late that night, long after the guests had departed and the fairy lights were turned off, the Sonoran desert returned to its deep, peaceful silence. A brilliant canopy of stars stretched across the dark purple sky.

Boone walked through the dark, quiet laboratory alone.

He stopped at his old wooden workbench—the only piece of furniture preserved from the original garage. The brass calipers, the scarred socket sets, and the frayed leather notebook rested under the soft spotlight of his old desk lamp.

He opened the notebook to the very first page.

“There isn't a machine in this world I can't understand if you give me enough time.” “I’m not a machine.” “No. Which is why the machine should fit you instead of making you fit it.”

Boone traced his mother’s handwriting with his thumb. The grief that had weighed down his heart for three long years was gone, replaced by a profound, radiant peace. He knew that somewhere beyond the stars, Mabel Halloway was looking down at this shop, watching the children run, and smiling her warm, gentle smile.

A soft footstep sounded on the polished concrete floor behind him.

Boone turned. Piper was standing in the doorway, wrapped in a light sweater against the cool desert night air. She walked over, leaning against the workbench beside him.

“Can’t sleep?” she asked softly.

“Just thinking,” Boone replied, looking around the glass walls of the facility. “About how one tiny sound can change a man’s entire life.”

Piper smiled, stepping closer to him. She reached out and lightly tapped the side of her right knee brace—now an ultra-sleek, silent Halloway custom frame that moved so fluidly it was nearly invisible beneath her clothes.

Silence. No click. Just the soft, steady rhythm of two people standing together in the desert night.

“It’s quiet now, Boone,” Piper whispered, holding his hand.

“Yeah,” Boone smiled, looking out at the endless Sonoran horizon bathed in moonlight. “It’s perfect.”
