Chapter 7 - The Boardroom War

By Friday morning, the blizzard had passed, leaving Chicago blanketed in brilliant, blinding white sunlight.

The corporate headquarters of Vance Global Logistics on Wacker Drive was filled with an electric, suffocating tension. The sixty-story glass tower was surrounded by news vans, satellite trucks, and reporters clamoring for entry.

Rumors had leaked to Wall Street: Richard Vance had called an emergency board meeting to strip Julian Vance of his CEO position, citing financial recklessness and personal instability.

Inside the grand, mahogany-paneled boardroom on the fifty-ninth floor, twelve board members sat around a massive oval conference table. At the head of the table sat Richard Vance, wearing a smirking expression of total victory.

“Gentlemen, ladies,” Richard announced, tapping his Montblanc pen against his water glass. “As you know, our stock has fluctuated three percent this week due to erratic behavior from our CEO. Julian has spent the last seventy-two hours sequestered in a private hospital wing, using corporate security assets to harbor an indigent woman and two unidentified children.”

Richard leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with malice.

“He has brought personal drama into this firm,” Richard continued smoothly. “He is compromised. I move that we vote immediately to remove Julian Vance as CEO and appoint an interim manager.”

The board members murmured nervously, exchanging uncertain glances.

The double doors of the boardroom swung open with a dramatic, heavy boom.

Julian Vance walked into the room.

He didn't look like a man under pressure. He wore an immaculate, bespoke charcoal suit, his dark hair neatly styled, his jaw set like iron. He exuded an aura of supreme, absolute confidence that instantly silenced the room.

Walking right beside him, her hand tucked securely into his broad palm, was Emma.

She was dressed in a beautiful navy wool coat over a white silk dress, her auburn hair brushed into glossy waves, a simple gold band holding it back. She carried herself with a quiet, regal dignity that mirrored her father’s every step.

Behind them walked two senior partners from Kirkland & Ellis, Chicago’s most prestigious law firm, carrying thick leather briefcases.

Richard’s smile faltered slightly as he saw Emma, but he quickly recovered his arrogance. “Julian, this is a private board meeting. You cannot bring children into the boardroom.”

Julian didn't answer. He walked to the head of the table, pulling out the grand leather armchair next to his own and seating Emma gently in it.

He then stood at the head of the table, resting his hands on the dark mahogany surface, looking down at the twelve board members.

“Members of the board,” Julian said, his deep voice filling the room with effortless authority. “My uncle has called this meeting under the premise that I am unfit to lead this company. He has accused me of harboring an 'indigent family' using corporate resources.”

Julian reached out, taking a thick manila folder from his lead attorney, and tossed it onto the center of the table.

“Inside that folder,” Julian announced, “is the certified DNA report from Northwestern Memorial Hospital, executed under federal oversight yesterday afternoon.”

The board members leaned forward, wide-eyed.

“The ten-year-old girl sitting beside me,” Julian declared, his voice ringing like a bronze bell, “is Emma Vance. She is my biological daughter, my sole legal heir, and the granddaughter of our founder, Arthur Vance.”

A collective gasp echoed through the boardroom. Two board members actually stood up in shock.

Richard’s face drained of all color. His hands shook violently as he reached for the folder, flipping open the pages. There, stamped with the official seal of the Cook County Superior Court, was the ninety-nine-point-nine percent paternal match.

“This... this is impossible!” Richard stammered, his voice rising in panic. “She’s a street kid! You forged this!”

“I forged nothing, Richard,” Julian said coldly. “And while we are discussing legal documents...”

Julian’s attorney stepped forward, dropping a second, massive black binder onto the table with a loud thud.

“This binder,” the attorney announced, “contains the sworn affidavits of former caretakers at the St. Jude’s estate in Aspen, alongside bank transfer records from 2018. They prove conclusively that Mr. Richard Vance committed federal extortion, witness intimidation, and corporate embezzlement by using offshore shell accounts to silence Sarah Riley and keep her from reaching Julian Vance.”

Richard backed away from the table, his eyes darting frantically toward the boardroom doors.

Standing by the doors were two agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, flanked by two Chicago police detectives.

“Richard Vance,” the senior FBI agent announced, stepping into the room and pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for federal extortion, wire fraud, and witness tampering.”

The boardroom descended into absolute chaos.

Board members shouted in outrage, pointing fingers at Richard as the federal agents led him away in handcuffs, his furious screams echoing down the marble hallway until the elevator doors closed.

Julian remained standing at the head of the table. He didn't look at his disgraced uncle.

He looked down at Emma, who was sitting quietly in her chair, watching the scene with calm, unbothered eyes.

Julian offered her a small, loving smile. “How was that, Emma?”

Emma looked up at her father, her dark eyes sparkling with quiet amusement. “You talk too much, Dad. But you were pretty cool.”

The board members burst into warm, joyful laughter, the heavy tension in the room instantly dissolving into a new era for Vance Global.
