Chapter 8 - The Trial of the Dynasty

The legal battle that rocked Wall Street and Manhattan high society lasted through the autumn months. The newspapers branded it "The Hartwell War."
Eleanor Hartwell hired the most expensive criminal defense attorneys money could buy, attempting to claim that Beatrice Vance was a liar and that Eleanor had only sent money upstate as charitable aid.
But William was relentless. He appeared at every court hearing himself, sitting in the front row in his dark suits, his cold gaze fixed on his mother. He provided bank records, private investigator surveillance logs, and medical records proving Clara had been denied advanced treatments because Eleanor’s agents had threatened the local clinic with funding cuts if they contacted the Hartwell family.
On a cold November afternoon, the jury returned its verdict. Eleanor Hartwell was found guilty on multiple counts of conspiracy, financial fraud, and child endangerment. She was sentenced to eight years in federal prison, her assets frozen and her name scrubbed from every university wing and hospital building her money had once bought.

As Eleanor was led out of the courtroom in silver handcuffs, she turned to look at her son one last time, her eyes pleading for a shred of filial mercy.
William did not look back. He was already leaning down, listening to Maya tell him about a drawing she had made in school that morning.
