Chapter 10 - The Legacy of the Lantern

The evening of the annual Detroit Hope Gala was a historic event.
The ballroom of the Westin Book Cadillac was packed with the city’s elite, but this was not a gathering of old money and silent corruption. This was the launch of the Laya Monroe Foundation for Homeless Children.
Julian Cross stood on the stage, wearing a classic black tuxedo. Beside him stood Evelyn, looking radiant, and Laya, who wore a small green velvet dress that matched her eyes.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian said, his voice carrying over the quiet, respectful crowd. "Six months ago, a five-year-old girl walked into the 12th Precinct carrying a suitcase containing three million dollars. She was hungry. She was cold. Her mother was dying of pneumonia for the sake of an eighty-dollar medicine."
He looked down at Laya, who was holding her mother’s hand, her face bright with innocent pride.
"She could have taken that money," Julian continued. "She could have saved her mother without anyone ever knowing. But she didn't. She chose honesty because she believed that a life built on theft can never bring peace. She saved my daughter’s life, she saved my soul, and she reminded this city of what truly matters."
He reached out, taking Laya’s small hand in his.
"Tonight, the Cross Group is pledging fifty million dollars to establish the Laya Monroe Foundation. We will build shelters, fund medical clinics, and ensure that no child in Detroit ever has to collect scrap metal in the snow to buy their mother’s life. We are no longer a city of shadows. We are a city of light."
The crowd erupted into a standing ovation, the sound thunderous and filled with genuine, warm emotion.
As the applause washed over them, Laya looked up at Julian, her green eyes shining.
"Did we find the peace, Julian?" she whispered.
Julian knelt down, pulling her and Evelyn into a tight, warm embrace, his tears hot against her shoulder.

"Yes, Laya," Julian whispered. "We found it. And we’re never letting it go."
Under the golden lights of the ballroom, the little girl who had once searched the dumpsters for survival stood as a beacon of hope for the entire city, her legacy of honesty turned forever into a empire of love.
