Chapter 4 - The Sealed Documents

The private penthouse office of Vance Maritime on the eightieth floor of the Willis Tower was silent, save for the hum of the climate control and the faint ticking of a grandfather clock.
Below the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city of Chicago spread out like a grid of yellow and diamond lights under the winter sky.
Julian sat at his massive mahogany desk. Beside him stood Marcus, his head of security, holding a set of fine surgical tools and a high-intensity ultraviolet lamp.
"Proceed," Julian said.
Marcus carefully unscrewed the dark brass fasteners on the back of the heavy oak frame. He lifted the wooden backing board away from the canvas.
A thick layer of black, oil-treated canvas paper came off first.
Beneath it, tucked into a flat, custom-milled compartment within the solid oak frame, lay a thick yellowed envelope sealed with red wax.
The wax bore the imprint of his father’s signet ring: a crest featuring a sea anchor and a rising falcon.
Julian’s breath hitched. He reached out with trembling fingers and lifted the envelope from its twenty-year-old resting place.
He broke the red wax seal and pulled out three folded sheets of thick parchment, along with a encrypted metallic flash drive.
The first document was a hand-written letter in his father's bold, clear cursive handwriting:
My Dearest Julian,
If you are reading this letter, then the worst has come to pass, and I am no longer there to protect you and little Clare. Arthur Sterling has betrayed our family. For three years, he has been systematically diverting funds from our logistics subsidiaries into Aegis Holdings—a shell entity controlled by Senator Jonathan Vance, my own brother.
They have discovered that I uncovered the embezzlement. They are planning something drastic. If an 'accident' occurs, know this: the entire Vance fortune, including the original land patents for the Port of Chicago and the maritime leases worth billions, was placed into a blind trust tied to this canvas.
The legal owner of the original original land patents is whoever holds the physical deed sealed within this frame. Do not trust Arthur Sterling. Do not trust your uncle Jonathan. Protect your sister.
Your loving father, Richard Vance
Julian sat completely still.
A terrible, suffocating weight settled over his chest, followed immediately by an inferno of white-hot rage.
His parents hadn't died in a random gas accident. They had been murdered.
And his sister Clare hadn't just been lost in the system—she had been deliberately hidden, her identity scrubbed by Arthur Sterling and his uncle, Senator Jonathan Vance, to prevent the legal trust from ever being claimed, allowing them to siphon tens of millions of dollars annually from the fake estate management firm.
The twins selling the painting hadn't just saved Clare from freezing in a cold apartment.
They had unleashed the key to an empire's dark, blood-stained secret.
Julian lowered the letter. His grey eyes turned into shards of polished steel. He picked up his phone and dialed a ten-digit private number.
"Sir?" the chief of the Chicago FBI Field Office answered on the second ring.
"Director Miller," Julian said, his voice dropping into a tone that was terrifyingly calm, quiet, and absolute. "This is Julian Vance. I need a federal grand jury convened at eight o'clock tomorrow morning. And I need arrest warrants issued for Senator Jonathan Vance and Arthur Sterling."
"Mr. Vance? On what charges?"
May you like
Julian looked at the painting of his parents standing in front of the white country house, then at the signature in the corner.
"On charges of double murder, child trafficking, and grand treason," Julian said. "And tell them I’m bringing the evidence myself."
