Chapter 4 - The Contents of Box 412

The subterranean vault of the Commonwealth Bank was a subterranean fortress of reinforced concrete, polished steel, and absolute silence.

The bank guard unlocked the heavy iron gate, his hands trembling slightly under Michael Sloane’s watchful gaze, and slid open the heavy metal door of Box 412. He withdrew a long, rectangular metal cash box and placed it gently on the felt-lined examination table in the center of the private viewing room before backing out of the room and closing the steel door behind him.

Sophia stood before the metal box, her breath hitching in her throat.

Michael stood a discreet distance away, keeping watch by the door. “Go ahead, Sophia. It’s yours.”

With shaking fingers, Sophia unlatched the metal clasps of the box and lifted the lid.

Inside sat a neat stack of old photograph albums, a velvet jewelry pouch containing her grandmother’s silver wedding band, and a thick manila envelope sealed with red wax bearing the embossed stamp of Walter Hayes’s former law firm.

She reached past the photographs and pulled the envelope out, her fingers tearing eagerly through the stiff paper.

Inside was a single, multi-page document titled: Exclusive Real Estate Assignment and Fiduciary Debt Instrument.

Sophia flipped directly to the signature page.

There, scrawled in her own teenage handwriting, was her name at the bottom of a financial obligation totaling not one hundred eighty-six thousand dollars, but zero dollars—a standard, harmless housing release form that had been digitally and physically spliced underneath a fraudulent liability rider drafted by Victor Reed six days after her mother’s funeral.

Stapled to the back of the document was a signed affidavit bearing Walter Hayes’s signature as legal witness, along with a handwritten confession dated eight years prior, detailing how Victor Reed had threatened to dispossess Sophia entirely if Walter refused to look the other way.

“Well?” Michael asked quietly, stepping closer. “Is it there?”

Sophia looked up, tears of pure, incandescent vindication shining in her eyes. She held up the papers like a banner of war.

“It’s all here,” she whispered, a fierce, triumphant smile breaking across her face. “Every single lie.”

Michael smiled back, a rare, genuine expression of approval crossing his sharp features.

“Then I suggest we pack it carefully, Miss Bennett,” Michael said smoothly, checking his gold watch. “Because Mr. Vale has arranged a very special dinner for tonight at Bellini’s. And I believe Mr. Victor Reed and his charming son Travis are expecting us.”
