Chapter 10 - THE UNBROKEN SKY

A week after the gala, summer had returned to the quiet hills of Upstate New York.
The sky above the old Vane family country estate in Dutchess County was an endless, brilliant blue, dotted with soft white clouds. The rolling green meadows stretched out toward a calm, pristine lake where wild ducks floated lazily along the water's edge.
This was the house where my grandmother Eleanor had lived—a beautiful, historic stone home with a wide wooden porch, surrounded by ancient oak trees and fragrant rose gardens.
I sat on a comfortable wooden bench on the porch, wearing a simple white linen dress, a straw hat shading my eyes from the warm sun.
Down in the green meadow, Caleb and Owen were running freely through the grass with a golden retriever puppy we had adopted two months ago. Their joyful shouts and laughter drifted across the open field as the puppy chased a red rubber ball into the shallow water near the dock.
"Look, Mommy!" Caleb yelled, holding up a bright yellow wildflower he had picked from the grass. "I found a sun-flower!"
"Bring it up here, baby!" I called back, smiling as both boys came sprinting up the grassy hill, their cheeks flushed rosy, their eyes sparkling with pure, unburdened happiness.
Caleb scrambled up the wooden steps and handed me the delicate yellow flower. I tucked it gently into the band of my straw hat.
"Thank you, my sweet boy," I murmured, pulling both Caleb and Owen into a tight, warm hug.
Owen leaned his head against my lap, looking out over the quiet lake. "Mommy? Is this where we're going to stay for the summer?"
"Yes, my love," I said, stroking his soft dark hair. "We're going to stay right here as long as you want."
"No more courts?" Caleb asked softly, looking into my eyes. "No more mean men in black suits?"
I looked at my two sons—my brave, beautiful boys who had walked through the dark storm beside me, who had slept on floor mattresses under paper stars, and who now stood as the loved, protected heirs to a proud family legacy.
"No more courts, sweetie," I promised, kissing their foreheads. "No more mean men. Just us, the sunshine, and the sky."
Owen smiled, wrapping his little arms around my waist, while Caleb sat beside me, taking my hand in his.

The warm summer breeze rustled through the leaves of the ancient oak trees, carrying the sweet scent of blooming roses across the porch. The sapphires at my ears caught the golden afternoon light, shining with a steady, brilliant blue that would never fade.
I leaned back against the wooden bench, watching my children play in the sunlit grass, knowing that the fight was over, the victory was complete, and our lives had finally begun.
