Chapter 5 - The Arraignment Battle

The Johnson County District Courthouse was packed to capacity by 9:00 a.m. Reporters, curious onlookers, and local residents crowded the wooden benches of Courtroom 3B, murmuring quietly as the bailiff prepared for the morning docket.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in my sharpest civilian suit, my posture rigid and unyielding. Beside me sat Emily, holding baby Noah in a soft blue carrier. She looked pale, but her chin was held high, her eyes fixed entirely on the heavy oak doors leading to the holding cells.
A moment later, the side doors opened, and the bailiff called out loudly:
“All rise for the Honorable Judge Robert Harrison!”
Judge Harrison—a stern, no-nonsense jurist with thirty years on the bench—strode briskly to his elevated mahogany desk, adjusted his reading glasses, and scanned the courtroom before sitting down.
“Be seated,” the judge commanded.
The first case called was State of Missouri v. Margaret Sterling and Vanessa Sterling.
The side doors clicked open, and the defendants were led into the courtroom in handcuffs and orange detention jumpsuits.
Margaret walked with her head held high, her gray hair neatly combed, maintaining an expression of haughty indignation as if she were a queen being unjustly dethroned by peasants. Vanessa followed right behind her, sniffling loudly, casting desperate glances toward the back of the courtroom as if expecting a cavalry rescue that would never arrive.
When Margaret caught sight of Emily sitting in the front row holding the baby, her eyes narrowed into venomous slits. She muttered something under her breath to her defense attorney—a high-priced criminal lawyer who looked distinctly uncomfortable representing two clients whose crimes were splashed across every major news network in the state.
“Good morning, Counsel,” Judge Harrison said, his deep, resonant voice cutting through the silent courtroom. “We are here for the formal arraignment on charges of felony domestic assault, elder exploitation, forgery, and conspiracy to commit fraud. How do the defendants plead?”
Margaret’s attorney stood up immediately.
“Not guilty, Your Honor. My clients categorically deny these sensationalized allegations. This is nothing more than a bitter family custody dispute blown out of proportion by an overzealous plaintiff and her military-vetted family.”
A quiet murmur rippled through the gallery.
Judge Harrison’s eyes flashed with cold irritation. He leaned forward over the bench, resting his forearms on the mahogany wood.
“Counsel,” Judge Harrison said, his voice dropping an octave with dangerous calm. “I have reviewed the preliminary investigative file, the medical reports detailing severe bruising on the victim’s wrists, the hospital toxicology logs, and the state police search warrant inventory containing forged property deeds and smashed mobile devices. If you call that a ‘bitter family custody dispute,’ you clearly need a refresher course in criminal law.”
The defense attorney swallowed hard and sat back down without another word.
“Regarding bail,” the prosecutor stepped forward smoothly, “the State moves for remand without bond. Both defendants pose an extreme flight risk, having actively attempted to liquidate the victim’s assets through fraudulent LLCs and secure expedited passports prior to law enforcement intervention.”
Judge Harrison didn't hesitate for a second.
“Motion granted. Defendants Margaret Sterling and Vanessa Sterling are remanded to the county detention facility without bond pending trial. Bail is denied.”
Bang!
The judge’s gavel struck the wood with a sharp, echoing crack.
Vanessa burst into loud, hysterical tears, burying her face in her hands as the bailiff stepped forward to snap her handcuffs tighter. Margaret turned around, glaring directly at Emily and me with an expression of pure, unadulterated hatred before being hauled away through the holding cell doors.
As the heavy metal doors slammed shut behind them, Emily let out a long, slow, trembling breath.

She looked down at baby Noah sleeping peacefully in her arms, smiled softly, and kissed his tiny forehead.
The nightmare was finally being locked away.
