Chapter 6 - The Penthouse Trap

At 4:30 PM, the elevator doors opened directly into the private foyer of a luxurious glass penthouse overlooking the Chicago riverfront.

Richard Vance—a slick, fifty-five-year-old man wearing a silk designer shirt and holding a leather duffel bag—was in the middle of zipping up a suitcase near his velvet sofa when we walked in.

He froze when he saw us.

Beside me walked Thatcher, Reed (my brother, whom I had called on the drive over to provide backup), David Vance, and two uniformed officers from the Cook County Sheriff's Department.

"Thatcher?" Richard stammered, his slick smile faltering as he dropped his duffel bag onto the sofa. "What... what is this? What's going on?"

"Hello, Uncle Richard," Thatcher said, stepping forward, his hands shoved deep into his coat pockets. His voice was terrifyingly calm. "We just came from Mom's house."

Richard’s eyes darted nervously past Thatcher, landing on David Vance and the two police officers.

"Look, if this is about the investment returns for the trust—" Richard began, raising his hands in a placating gesture.

"It's not about the investment returns, Richard," I interjected, stepping out from behind Reed. "It's about the ten percent kickback you took from Private Equity First to force your sister into a defaulted mortgage on the Whitmore estate."

Richard’s slick demeanor shattered instantly. He looked at me, his eyes narrowing in contempt. "Who the hell are you?"

"I'm Simone Carter," I said softly. "Thatcher’s wife. And the sole owner of Apex Capital's primary frozen bank account."

Richard gasped, his face turning bright white. "What?!"

"Did you really think a shell company registered in Delaware couldn't be traced by a senior financial analyst, Richard?" I asked, pulling a legal document from my briefcase. "At 3:00 PM today, we executed an emergency freeze writ on your secondary offshore account in the Bahamas. The two hundred and fifty thousand dollars you stole from Bernice... along with the four hundred thousand you took in illegal lender kickbacks... is currently locked."

"You can't do that!" Richard roared, lunging forward toward me.

Before he could take two steps, Reed stepped directly into his path. My six-foot-three brother grabbed Richard by his silk lapels, shoving him back hard onto his velvet sofa.

"Sit down," Reed barked, his voice vibrating through the penthouse. "Or I'll let the officers handle you less politely."

The lead sheriff’s deputy stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Richard Vance," the deputy announced clearly. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, financial fraud, and illegal wire scheme operations. You have the right to remain silent."

As the deputy pulled Richard’s arms behind his back and clicked the cuffs into place, Richard turned his head toward Thatcher, his eyes filled with desperate panic.

"Thatcher! Talk to them!" Richard begged, his voice high and squeaky. "We're family! You can't let them do this to me! Your mother gave me that money!"

Thatcher looked down at his uncle—the man who had preyed on his family's vulnerability to fund a lavish lifestyle while letting his sister drown in debt.

"Family doesn't destroy family for profit, Richard," Thatcher said softly. "Enjoy Miami."

The officers marched Richard out of the penthouse, leaving the luxurious room in absolute, echoing silence.

Thatcher turned to me, wrapping his arms tightly around my waist and burying his face in my neck. I felt his shoulders shake slightly as the immense weight of the past three days finally released its grip on him.

"Thank you, Simone," Thatcher whispered against my skin. "Thank you for saving us."

"We're a team, Thatcher," I murmured back, kissing his cheek. "Now let's go finish rebuilding your life."
