Chapter 9 - The Verdict

By mid-February, the trial of United States v. Cassandra Caldwell had concluded with breathtaking speed.

Without the safety net of her father’s depleted political influence, her mother’s silent complicity, or the elaborate network of shell corporations she had spent years building, Cassandra’s defense collapsed under the weight of undeniable mathematical proof.

The jury deliberated for less than three hours before returning guilty verdicts on all fourteen federal counts: wire fraud, securities manipulation, interstate embezzlement, and identity theft regarding the forged pension guarantees.

The sentencing hearing was scheduled for a Tuesday morning in late February.

I didn't attend in person. There was no need to watch the courtroom drama unfold; the outcome had been mathematically determined the moment I pulled those transactional logs from the Vesper Holdings database months ago. Instead, I monitored the legal updates through the public federal court portal while working in my office.

At 11:15 AM, the final docket entry flashed across my screen:

SENTENCE IMPOSED: Defendant Cassandra Caldwell sentenced to twelve (12) years in federal custody at Dublin FCI, followed by three years of supervised release. Restitution ordered in the amount of $18.4 million.

Twelve years.

For a woman who had measured her entire existence by the price tag of a leased yellow Lamborghini, the stark, institutional gray of a federal correctional facility was the ultimate equalizer. Her world of country club galas, elite investor pitches, and performative luxury had vanished, replaced by concrete walls and a uniform.

My phone buzzed shortly after the sentencing notice appeared. It was an email from Charles Hargrove.

Minnie, The federal judge just handed down the sentence. Twelve years. The pension fund recovery is fully finalized, and our new aerospace compliance division is officially greenlit for the Q2 launch. Let’s grab dinner tonight at the marina to celebrate a system operating at one hundred percent efficiency. — Charles

I looked at the message, then glanced over at the framed FBI certificate hanging quietly on my office wall.

I typed out a brief reply: Dinner sounds fine, Charles. I’ll bring the final telemetry reports for review.
