Chapter 10 - The Garden of Light

Six months later.

Spring had arrived in upstate New York, turning the Bedford estate into a paradise of blooming cherry blossoms, lush green lawns, and singing birds.

On the stone patio overlooking the private lake, a long wooden dining table was decorated with fresh white flowers and silver place settings.

Mrs. Gable was busy bringing out large platters of grilled peach salad, fresh pasta, and chilled prosecco. Sitting near the end of the table was my younger brother, Leo, whom Nico had quietly brought over from Italy three months ago, fully funding his university education at Columbia.

In the center of the lawn, a large, custom-built wooden playpen sat beneath the shade of an ancient oak tree.

Inside the playpen, seven-month-old Clara was sitting up on a soft quilt, giggling hysterically as she tried to catch a bright yellow butterfly fluttering just out of her reach.

Nico was down on all fours beside her on the grass, making ridiculous facial expressions, gently guiding the baby's tiny hands as she tried to push herself up onto her feet.

I stood near the edge of the patio, holding a glass of iced tea, watching them.

I was wearing a simple white linen sundress, my hair falling softly down my back, my skin glowing with health and peace. The fear that had ruled my life for eight months—the constant checking of shadows, the fear of footsteps behind me, the cold, metallic taste of terror—was completely gone.

Nico looked up, catching me watching him.

A bright, breathtaking smile spread across his face—a smile that held no dark secrets, no syndicate weight, no blood.

He stood up, picking Clara up in his broad arms, resting her against his hip, and walked over to me across the green grass.

"She almost stood up by herself just now," Nico said proudly, his eyes shining as he looked at our daughter. "She’s going to be walking by eight months."

"Just like her father," I laughed, reaching out to fix Clara’s sun hat. "Always in a hurry to run the world."

Nico set Clara gently down in her high-chair near the dining table, where Mrs. Gable immediately stepped in to feed her mashed peaches.

Nico turned to me, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind, pulling me back against his warm, solid chest. He rested his chin on my shoulder, breathing in the scent of my hair.

"Are you happy, Elena?" he whispered against my ear.

I placed my hands over his arms, looking out over the sparkling lake, listening to the laughter of my brother, the soft cooing of my daughter, and the gentle rustle of the oak leaves in the warm spring breeze.

I turned around in his arms, wrapping my arms around his neck, looking deep into those dark eyes that had once terrified me and now held my entire universe.

"I am not Elena Caruso anymore," I whispered softly, smiling up at him. "And I am not Clara Bellini."

Nico’s lips curved into a tender, breathtaking smile. "Then who are you, my love?"

May you like

"I am Elena Vitale," I said, leaning up to press my lips against his in a sweet, slow, eternal kiss. "Your wife. Clara’s mother. And I am home."

Nico pulled me closer, holding me tight against his heart under the bright, golden afternoon sun, as the cold shadows of the past dissolved into the everlasting warmth of our future.
