Chapter 4 - The Arrival of the King

At 10:15 AM, a black Mercedes sedan pulled rapidly up the brick driveway, screeching to a halt near the side entrance.

Ryan stepped out.

He looked immaculate on the surface—wearing a custom navy suit, a pale pink silk tie that perfectly matched the rose accents of my dress, and carrying a massive bouquet of fifty long-stemmed pink roses.

But up close, he was a wreck.

His eyes were bloodshot, his skin was sallow despite a fresh shave, and his hands were trembling slightly as he handed his keys to the valet.

He scanned the crowded lawn frantically until his eyes landed on me.

I was standing under the stone archway near the glass conservatory, holding a glass of sparkling peach cider, chatting pleasantly with a federal judge and his wife. I looked serene, beautiful, and completely undisturbed.

Ryan practically broke into a run as he approached me, his chest heaving.

"Claire," he rasped, bowing his head as he stepped into the shade of the archway, hiding his face from the nearby guests. "Thank God. Thank God you’re down here."

"Good morning, Ryan," I said pleasantly, taking a small sip of my cider. "You made it. Did your flight from D.C. go well?"

Ryan winced as if I had struck him with a whip.

"Claire, please," he pleaded in an urgent, desperate whisper, stepping closer, holding out the pink roses. "I didn't sleep a second. I sat in that room until dawn hating myself. Julianne is nothing to me—she was a ghost from my past who reached out because her father’s firm is going bankrupt! I swear to you on our baby’s life, nothing happened!"

I looked at the pink roses in his hands.

"You dropped liquid on the carpet, Ryan," I said softly, my voice carrying zero emotion. "And she was in a robe."

Ryan’s face drained of what little color he had left. "Claire... I’ll do anything. I’ll sign whatever you want. I’ll step down from Whitmore Capital. I’ll go to counseling every day of the week. Just... please don't do this here. My mother... the board members downstairs... if this gets out, it will ruin the firm’s IPO next month."

The IPO.

Even now, kneeling in spirit before his pregnant wife, his brain was calculating the financial fallout on his stock options.

"Ryan, darling!" Margaret’s loud, aristocratic voice boomed across the patio as she glided toward us, wearing a stunning lavender suit and a pearl necklace. "There you are! We were beginning to think the Washington consultants had kidnapped you!"

Ryan forced his shoulders to straighten, sweeping a fake, practised smile across his face as he turned to his mother. "Never, Mom. I’d walk through fire to be here today."

"Of course you would!" Margaret beamed, wrapping her arm through Ryan’s, then reaching out to touch my arm with deep affection. "Look at them, Judge Stevens! Haven't you ever seen a more beautiful couple? Three years of waiting, and now God has blessed us with a Whitmore heiress!"

The guests nearby murmured in agreement, raising their glasses toward us.

Ryan looked at me, his eyes pleading, desperate, begging for a sign that I was going to keep his secret.

I smiled at him—a sweet, dazzling smile that made his breath catch in his throat.

"Ryan is right, Margaret," I said smoothly, looking directly into my husband’s bloodshot eyes. "He really did walk through fire to get here today. And I think it’s time we showed everyone just how much he sacrificed for this family."

Margaret clapped her hands together in delight. "Oh, wonderful! Todd just signaled me from the conservatory! The video presentation is ready!"

Ryan’s head snapped toward the conservatory glass doors.

"Wait," Ryan stammered, a sudden, cold panic creeping into his voice. "Mom, wait—maybe we should do the presentation after lunch—"

"Nonsense!" Margaret overruled him with a cheerful wave of her hand. "Everyone is already gathered in the garden! Come along, Ryan! Hold your wife’s hand!"

Ryan turned to me, his hand shaking violently as he tried to take my fingers.

May you like

I pulled my hand back gently, resting it over my belly.

"Lead the way, Ryan," I whispered softly. "It’s your big moment."
