Chapter 9 - The Ghost of Highway 12

That autumn, a quiet package arrived at the Vance Logistics headquarters, addressed personally to Daniel Mercer.
Daniel opened the heavy cardboard box inside his pristine, state-of-the-art office overlooking the Chicago fleet yards.
Inside the box lay a restored, beautifully polished chrome emblem: CHEVROLET MALIBU.
Below the emblem was a small, hand-engraved brass plaque mounted on a piece of dark polished oak wood. The plaque read:
To the 120-Mile Malibu. It broke its heart so that a mother and daughter could heal theirs. Thank you, Daniel. — Clara & Evelyn Vance
Daniel touched the cold chrome of the emblem, a lump forming in his throat.
Thomas stepped into his office, holding a folder. "Mr. Mercer, the vehicle restoration team in Madison finished the project yesterday, just as Miss Vance requested."
Daniel walked down to the private executive garage beneath the building.
Standing in the center of a spotless bay, glowing under bright LED lights, was his old twelve-year-old Chevy Malibu.
It wasn't just repaired; it had been completely restored to factory-new condition. The faded silver paint was replaced with a deep, gleaming metallic sapphire blue. Under the hood sat a brand-new, custom-built high-performance engine. The worn interior had been replaced with soft, hand-stitched leather.
Attached to the rearview mirror was a small, laminated photo taken six months ago: Daniel, Lily, and Evelyn sitting together on a bench outside St. Catherine’s Hospital, laughing under the morning sun.
Evelyn stepped out from behind a concrete pillar, leaning against the polished fender of the car, her arms crossed, a soft smile playing on her lips.
"I thought you said she was a two-ton piece of scrap metal," Evelyn teased softly.
Daniel walked around the car, his hand gliding smoothly over the gleaming blue hood. "She was. But I guess she had one more miracle left in her."
Evelyn walked up to him, taking both of his hands in hers. "She didn't perform the miracle, Daniel. You did."
She reached up, pressing her forehead against his chest, listening to the steady, strong rhythm of his heart.
"You saved my mother," Evelyn whispered. "You saved my family. You saved me."
May you like
Daniel rested his chin on top of her head, closing his eyes as the warmth of her presence filled the quiet space of the garage.
"We saved each other, Evelyn," Daniel murmured softly. "We saved each other."
