Chapter 5 - The Paper Trail

The night was freezing, the temperature plunging below zero as Graham drove into the industrial district on the east side of Bright Maple.

He wasn't going to Apex Tower this time. He was going to the old municipal archives building, where public property records, tax liens, and corporate ownership histories were stored in dusty rows of steel filing cabinets and digital mainframes.

His primary ally there was an old friend named Hank, a veteran city archivist who had spent thirty years watching rich developers buy and sell Bright Maple like a Monopoly board.

"You're playing with fire, son," Hank said, sliding a thick manila folder across his metal desk under the harsh hum of fluorescent lights. "Julian Vance isn't just a local developer. He’s the primary financial contributor to the mayor’s re-election campaign. If you cross him, the city isn't just going to look the other way—they’re going to help him bury you."

"Let them try," Graham said, pulling out the documents inside the folder. "Show me what you found."

Hank tapped a thick finger against a printed property deed. "Three months ago, Riverside Apartments wasn't bought by Maple Ridge Holdings directly. It was acquired through a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands called Apex Horizon LLC."

Graham’s brow furrowed. "That’s standard tax-evasion structuring for large portfolios. Nothing illegal on its own, unless..."

"Unless," Hank interrupted with a grim smile, "you cross-reference the primary financial backer of that shell company with municipal water and sanitation code violations filed against Riverside Apartments over the last two years."

Hank pulled out a second, much thicker stack of papers.

"Vance didn't just buy the building to build a parking structure," Hank explained, lowering his voice. "He deliberately neglected maintenance on the heating units, plumbing, and roof structural supports for eighteen months before the purchase. He engineered a manufactured blight. He starved the building of basic repairs so the city health inspector would declare it uninhabitable, allowing him to bypass tenant protection laws and fast-track demolition permits for commercial zoning conversion."

Graham stared at the documents, his chest tightening with cold fury. It wasn't just corporate ruthlessness—it was calculated, premeditated fraud against vulnerable families, executed with the silent, corrupt blessing of local municipal officials.

"Do you have digital copies of this?" Graham asked quietly.

"Every single page," Hank said, tapping a small USB flash drive resting beside his keyboard. "Including bank transfer logs linking the shell company directly to Julian Vance’s personal signature."

Graham reached out, picking up the flash drive. It was small, no bigger than a matchstick, but it held enough explosive power to blow Julian Vance’s entire empire sky-high.

"Thank you, Hank," Graham said.

"Be careful, boy," the old archivist warned as Graham turned toward the exit. "Vance has teeth. And when cornered animals bite, they don't care who they tear apart."
