Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Double Life

While Imogen was consolidating her corporate power in the mountain carriage house, Roland was sitting in his car three miles away, staring blankly at a dashboard that suddenly felt like a prison cell.
His phone buzzed violently. It wasn't Arthur Pendelton; it was Celeste.
He swiped to answer, bringing the phone to his ear with a shaking hand.
"Roland? Where are you?" Celeste’s voice was high, frantic, and laced with genuine panic. "I’m still at the hotel downtown. The front desk just called up to my room. They said my credit card was declined. When I tried to log into my company account, my access was blocked!"
"Celeste, shut up," Roland growled, his voice vibrating with suppressed fury.
"Shut up? What do you mean, shut up?" she shrieked. "I went down to the lobby to get a taxi, and the doorman told me my parking pass was canceled. Roland, what is happening? Did Imogen find out about the apartment?"
Roland pinched the bridge of his nose, feeling a massive migraine blooming behind his eyes. "Imogen didn't just find out about the apartment, Celeste. She found out about the offshore accounts. She’s locked me out of the company, she’s frozen all our personal lines of credit, and she’s currently sitting in the CEO's chair executing a corporate takeover!"
A long silence stretched over the phone line.
"Your... your company?" Celeste whispered, her voice dropping an octave as the reality of her own precarious position began to dawn on her. "Roland, you’re a billionaire. You can't just be locked out of your own company."
"I am locked out!" Roland roared, finally snapping. "Do you understand what that means? We are broke! Every asset I own is tied up in the family trust, and Imogen is the sole trustee! If I try to buy a cup of coffee right now, my debit card will be flagged as stolen property!"
"Well, then fix it!" Celeste screamed back. "Call your lawyers! Sue her! Get a court order!"
"With what money, Celeste?!" Roland yelled, slamming his palm against the steering wheel once more. "My personal accounts are empty! I funneled the liquid cash into the Vanguard holdings to buy your townhouse, which is currently registered under your maiden name, which means the federal investigators are probably auditing that too!"
The line went dead. Celeste had hung up.
Roland stared at the phone screen, watching the call disconnect. He sat alone in the quiet car as the midday sun finally burned through the gray mist, casting a harsh, unforgiving light across the windshield.

For twelve years, he had believed he was the master of his universe—the brilliant architect of a multi-million-dollar empire, a man who could bend people, rules, and laws to his will. He had treated his wife like a quiet ornament, his family like a decorative backdrop, and his mistress like a disposable luxury.
Now, sitting in a parked car with a dead battery starting to drain his electronics, he realized the terrifying truth: he didn't even have the keys to start the engine.
