Chapter 6 - The Federal Wire

The ballroom erupted into chaotic noise.
Alarms didn't sound, but the collective gasps and hurried whispers were deafening.
Holloway Crest Group under federal investigation for securities fraud.
Unreported liabilities exceeding four hundred million dollars.
Misappropriation of federal defense grants.
Arthur Sterling stood up slowly from Table Two, his phone in his hand, his expression cold and professional. He looked across the room directly at Grant Holloway.
“Mr. Holloway,” Sterling’s deep voice boomed across the marble floor. “My firm holds eighty million dollars in Holloway Crest senior notes. If these DOJ filings are accurate regarding the fraudulent asset valuations...” Sterling paused, buttoning his jacket, “my legal team is calling an immediate default on your debt. Effective right now.”
Grant staggered back against the edge of the dais, his hand gripping the velvet table runner to keep from falling. “Sterling—wait—that’s fake news—that’s a coordinated attack—!”
“It’s not fake, Grant,” a sharp voice called out from near the doors.
Everyone turned.
Four men in dark federal windbreakers emblazoned with FBI across the back pushed through the service doors, flanked by local police officers. Leading them was a senior special agent with a thick folder in his hand.
The heavy glass doors behind them swung open to reveal flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the wet pavement outside the seventy-story tower.
Vanessa grabbed her husband’s arm, her fingernails digging deep into his sleeve. “Grant... what is happening? Who are these people?”
The FBI agent walked straight down the center aisle, ignoring the panicked whispers of the billionaires, and stopped right in front of Table One.
He didn't look at Grant.
He didn't look at Vanessa.
Instead, the federal agent stopped three feet from Ethan Cole, snapped to a crisp, formal posture, and gave a sharp nod of deep professional respect.
“Mr. Cole,” the agent said loudly enough for the entire room to hear. “We’ve secured the federal servers. The data packet your firm provided matched every transaction. The warrant for Mr. Holloway’s arrest has been signed by the judge.”
The silence in the room was absolute.
Every eye—every single pair of terrified, astonished, disbelieving eyes in the grand ballroom—slowly shifted from the federal agent back to the broke single father who had walked in forty-five minutes earlier, wearing a midnight-blue tuxedo and holding his daughter’s hand.
Grant Holloway’s knees buckled. He grabbed the edge of the dais as the two federal marshals stepped up beside him, their hands resting smoothly on their handcuffs.
“Grant Holloway, you are under arrest for wire fraud, securities manipulation, and federal contract falsification,” the agent’s voice rang out through the hall.
As the stainless steel cuffs clicked onto Grant’s wrists, Vanessa let out a strangled cry and stumbled backward into a tiered crystal champagne tower.
Crash.
Glass shattered everywhere, spraying sparkling wine and crystal across the pristine white marble floor. Vanessa sank to her knees among the glittering shards, her emerald gown stained with alcohol, her hair coming undone in wild, desperate strands.
She looked up, her tear-filled eyes locking onto Ethan.
“You...” she whispered, her voice cracking with pure horror. “You did this. You planned this whole thing just to destroy us.”
Ethan looked down at her—not with anger, not with hatred, but with the quiet, devastating indifference of a man who had already forgotten she existed.
“Vanessa,” Ethan said softly, his voice carrying clearly across the ruined ballroom. “I didn't destroy you. I didn't have to touch a thing. You spent four years building an empire out of paper, and you invited the wind inside to see how well it stood up.”

He reached down, gently taking Lily’s hand.
“Come on, sweetheart,” Ethan said. “The party’s over.”
