Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

The national launch gala for The Phoenix Collection was held at the Grand Hyatt Ballroom in downtown Nashville on a crisp autumn evening in October.
The event was a glittering spectacle of high society, corporate titans, beauty industry leaders, and national media representatives. The ballroom was decorated in deep crimson, gold, and white floral arrangements, with soft, ambient lighting highlighting massive, museum-style displays showcasing the new product line.
Claire stood near the main stage, surrounded by a group of senior retail executives from London and Tokyo who were competing for exclusive international distribution rights.
She looked breathtaking in a custom crimson silk gown with an asymmetrical off-the-shoulder neckline that proudly framed her collarbone and the delicate, silvered graft scars along her left side. She wore no heavy foundation over her scars—only the lightweight, glowing mineral balm she had personally formulated with Aris Thorne.
Standing a few feet away, watching her with quiet pride, was Aris. He wore a crisp black tuxedo that cleaned up his usual untamed laboratory look remarkably well.
"She belongs on a global stage," a voice murmured beside Aris.
Aris turned to see Clarissa Vance standing beside him, holding a champagne flute.
"She built the stage herself, Clarissa," Aris said softly, his gray eyes never leaving Claire’s glowing face.
Clarissa offered him a sharp, knowing smile. "And when are you going to tell her that you've been in love with her since the day she slammed a sixty-page clinical report on your desk and demanded you reformulate the lipid base?"
Aris flushed slightly, clearing his throat awkwardly. "She’s my executive director, Clarissa. She went through a traumatic divorce and built a life from scratch. The last thing she needs is her lead engineer making things complicated."
"Aris," Clarissa said gently, tapping her champagne glass against his arm. "Claire doesn't need protection from real emotions. She needs a man who sees her whole story and isn't afraid to stand beside her in the light."
Before Aris could respond, a sudden commotion near the grand double doors of the ballroom drew the attention of the crowd.
Voices were raised. Security guards stepped forward.
"I just need five minutes with her! Let me through!" a frantic, unkempt voice yelled across the foyer.
Claire paused mid-sentence in her conversation with the Tokyo distributors, turning her head toward the entrance.
Pushing his way past two large security officers at the velvet rope was Ethan Bennett.
He looked unhinged. His hair was greasy and wild, his tuxedo jacket was wrinkled and mismatched, and his eyes were bloodshot and wet with tears. He reeked faintly of cheap bourbon.
"Claire!" Ethan screamed, spotting her in the center of the ballroom in her brilliant crimson gown. "Claire, please! Just listen to me!"
The room fell into a shocked, hushed silence. Four hundred wealthy, high-profile guests turned to stare at the intruder.
Marcus Brody, the marketing executive, stepped forward angrily. "Security, get this guy out of here! He's trespassing!"
"Wait," Claire’s voice rang out across the silent ballroom—cool, clear, and commanding.
She held up a hand, stopping the security guards who were about to drag Ethan to the floor.
Claire handed her glass of sparkling water to a nearby waiter and walked slowly, deliberately toward the entrance. Aris stepped up right behind her, his posture rigid, ready to intervene the second Ethan made a threatening move.
Claire stopped three feet away from Ethan.
Up close, the contrast between them was devastating. Claire stood like a goddess forged in fire—radiant, powerful, surrounded by the empire she had built. Ethan looked like a ghost haunting his own ruined life.
"Ethan," Claire said, her tone devoid of any emotion other than a mild, distant curiosity. "You are causing a scene at a private corporate event."
Ethan dropped to his knees right there on the polished marble floor of the foyer, uncaring that news cameras and high-society photographers were filming every second of his humiliation.
"Claire... please," Ethan sobbed, tears streaming down his flushed cheeks. "I was wrong! I was so unbelievably wrong! I lost everything... the agency is gone, the money is gone, everyone left me! I realized... I realized I love you! I've always loved you!"
He reached out, trying to grab the hem of her crimson silk gown with shaking hands.
"I don't care about the scars, Claire!" Ethan wept hysterically. "Look at me! I swear to God I don't care about your face anymore! I see how beautiful you are! Please... give me another chance! Let me come home!"
The crowd gasped at his pathetic, desperate plea.
Claire looked down at the man kneeling at her feet—the man who had left her alone with surgical bandages in a cold kitchen, the man who had traded her sacrifice for a hotel room in Chicago, the man who now claimed he "didn't care about her scars" as if forgiving her for having them.
She didn't raise her voice. She didn't slap him. She didn't cry.
She leaned down slightly, looking him directly in his bloodshot eyes.
"Ethan," Claire whispered, her voice carrying clearly through the silent foyer. "You still don't get it, do you?"
Ethan blinked, his breath hitching. "W-what?"
"My scars were never the problem," Claire said, her voice dropping into an octave of absolute, terrifying clarity. "My scars were proof that I walked through hell to save a human life. Your problem, Ethan, is that beneath your handsome face, you were hollow. The fire didn't ruin my beauty. It just burned away your mask."
She straightened her spine, looking at the lead security officer.
"Escort Mr. Bennett off the property," Claire ordered cleanly. "If he returns, press full criminal trespassing charges."
"Claire! No! Claire!" Ethan screamed as two massive security guards grabbed him under his arms, hauling him off his knees and dragging him backward through the glass doors into the cold night air.
Claire didn't watch him go.
She turned around, smoothed the crimson silk of her gown, and looked at the four hundred guests staring at her in absolute awe.
She smiled—a radiant, unshakeable smile that lit up the entire room.

"My apologies for the interruption, ladies and gentlemen," Claire announced smoothly, raising her chin high. "Now, where were we?"
The ballroom erupted into thunderous, deafening applause.
