Chapter 5 - The Landing at Charlotte

The tires of the Boeing 777 hit the runway at Charlotte Douglas International Airport with a heavy smoke-ring screech and a sudden surge of reverse thrust.
The plane slowed, turning off the active runway toward the international terminal gates.
Inside the cabin, the quiet tension reached a boiling point. Passengers began standing up, pulling bags from overhead bins, putting on coats, and checking phones.
In seat 31A, Claire stood up. She smoothed down her dark jacket, adjusted her hair, and looked at me.
"Ready, Mrs. Reed?" I asked, offering her a faint smile.
"Ready, Mason," she said, her voice steady.
We joined the line of passengers moving slowly down the aisle toward the front exit.
As we passed through the first-class cabin, Grant Vance was already waiting near the door. He wore his tailored charcoal suit jacket, his dark leather briefcase held firmly in his left hand. Beside him stood Evelyn Bennett, her face pale but resolute.
Grant stepped into the aisle, blocking our path.
"Claire," he said smoothly, ignoring me entirely. "I've arranged for a private escort through diplomatic customs. We have a driver waiting downstairs at the VIP pickup zone."
"We're going through standard international arrivals, Grant," Claire said coolly.
"Don't be ridiculous," Grant sneered softly. "Your mother is tired. We don't need to stand in line with three hundred people. Give me your bag, and let's go."
He reached out his hand to take Claire's purse.
I stepped between them, my broad shoulder forcing Grant’s arm back.
"She said no, Vance," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the first-class cabin.
Grant’s face darkened. "Get out of my way, Reed. This is a private family matter."
"Actually, it's a border control matter," Evelyn Bennett interrupted sharply, stepping past Grant to stand beside her daughter. "Grant, give Claire her passport."
Grant froze. He looked at Evelyn in genuine surprise. "Evelyn, what are you talking about? I don't have her passport."
"You took it from her bag in the jetway at Leonardo da Vinci Airport," Evelyn said, her voice loud enough that two flight attendants turned to look. "I saw you put it in your left inner suit pocket."
Grant’s eyes flickered with a sudden, violent flash of anger. He realized instantly that the old woman he had manipulated for a year had turned against him.
"Evelyn, you're confused—" Grant began.
"She's not confused," Claire said, leaning forward. "And if you don't hand it over right now, I'm going to inform the Chief CBP Officer at the gate that you are carrying stolen federal identity documents across an international border."
A flight attendant stepped forward, sensing the escalating conflict. "Is there a problem here, folks?"
Grant looked at the flight attendant, then at the passengers behind us who were watching the scene unfold, and finally at me. He realized he was surrounded, outmaneuvered, and seconds away from a public scene that would involve airport police before he even reached the terminal.
His jaw tightened until a muscle twitched in his cheek.
Slowly, with deliberate slowness, he reached into his left inner suit pocket. He pulled out the dark blue US passport and held it out toward Claire.
"It must have slipped into my jacket when I was holding your coat," Grant said, his voice dripping with venomous sarcasm. "A simple mistake."
Claire snatched the passport from his hand, her fingers gripping it tightly.
"A mistake," Claire said, looking him dead in the eye. "Just like the 1.3 million dollars sent to Coastal Marine Supply."
Grant’s face drained of every drop of color. He stared at Claire as if she had suddenly produced a loaded weapon.
Before he could speak, the cabin door opened, and the rush of cool North Carolina air filled the jetway.

"Let's go, Mason," Claire said, taking my arm.
We walked past Grant Vance, leaving him standing alone in the aisle of first class, his arrogance completely shattered by the woman he had thought he could control.
