Chapter 10 - The Sicilian Table

Eighteen months later.

The morning sun flooded through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of Penelope’s Sicilian Table, a stunning, two-story bakery and restaurant located on a prime corner of Brooklyn’s historic waterfront.

The restaurant was packed.

The air was filled with the intoxicating aromas of fresh espresso, warm cannoli, orange-blossom honey, and simmering tomato sauce. Lines of eager customers stretched down the block, waiting to sample the authentic dishes that every food critic in New York had been praising for the past year.

Behind the marble counter, wearing a stylish dark blue apron over a floral dress that accentuated her gorgeous, voluptuous curves, stood Penelope. Her dark hair was styled in a chic bun, her skin glowing with radiant health and happiness.

She was placing a platter of fresh pistachio arancini into a display case when a pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind.

Penelope leaned back into the solid, warm chest of her husband.

Dominic kissed the sensitive spot behind her ear, his broad hand resting tenderly over the distinct, round curve of her six-month pregnant belly.

"You need to sit down, Mrs. Moretti," Dominic murmured softly, his deep voice vibrating against her back. "You’ve been on your feet for three hours."

Penelope turned around in his arms, wrapping her hands around the lapels of his tailored suit jacket. Dominic had completely stepped down from his high-stress corporate operations, turning the day-to-day management of Moretti Hospitality over to a trusted board so he could focus on his family and his wife's business.

"I am fine, Dominic," she smiled, leaning up to kiss his lips lingeringly. "Our daughter likes the movement. She told me so."

Dominic’s face softened into a smile that only Penelope ever saw—a smile filled with pure, unadulterated devotion. He leaned down, pressing his hand flat against her stomach. "She needs to rest. And so do you."

At a prominent corner booth near the front window sat Salvatore.

The old man was wearing a sharp linen suit, holding his newborn grandson’s hand—Chloe’s infant son, as Penelope had hired her former coworker to manage the front-of-house staff. Salvatore was holding court with three old neighborhood friends from Bensonhurst, laughing boisterously as he ate a plate of fresh bucatini.

Looking through the window, Penelope saw the bustling streets of Brooklyn, the blue waters of the East River, and the gleaming skyline of Manhattan in the distance.

She remembered the night at Bellafonte—the cold back hallway, the arrogant manager, the fear, and the six words in an ancient language that had changed her life forever.

She had spent years believing her size, her background, and her curves made her invisible to a world obsessed with artificial perfection.

Now, as she looked at her thriving business, her healthy father-in-law, and the powerful, fierce man who held her as if she were the most precious treasure in the universe, she knew the truth.

Never beg foolish people to see your worth.

Make them fall in love with your soul.

Dominic wrapped his arms tighter around her, pulling her close as the morning sun warmed their quiet corner of the world.

"I love you, Penelope," Dominic whispered in flawless, smooth Sicilian.

May you like

Penelope smiled, resting her head against his chest.

"I know, my crime boss," she whispered back. "Now go grab an apron. We have a lunch rush to feed."
