Chapter 10 - The Horizon of Light

The sun began to set over Lake Michigan, painting the Chicago skyline in brilliant shades of amber, copper, and deep violet. The sound of laughter, clinking crystal, and children’s voices drifted out from the open-air pavilion where the reception was under way.

Julian led his new wife out to the edge of the stone terrace, away from the music, his arm wrapped tightly around her waist to keep the cool spring breeze from reaching her bare back. He had removed his tuxedo jacket, draping it over her shoulders with a protective familiarity that had become her favorite part of the day.

"Look at them, Ellie," Julian murmured, gesturing toward the garden where Walter was currently playing chess with Leo, his old Cubs cap resting proudly on the corner of the table.

"We did it," she whispered, leaning her head against his powerful shoulder, the silver band of her ring pressing against his white linen shirt. "The basement is gone."

"The basement was just a testing ground, my love," Julian said softly, his fingers gently lifting her chin until her green eyes met his fierce, unyielding gray ones. "You spent your last twelve dollars defending an old man you didn't know. Tonight, I am spending my entire empire to ensure that no one ever makes you feel small again. You gave my grandfather back his dignity, Ellie. You gave me back my heart."

He leaned down, his lips meeting hers in a deep, possessive kiss that tasted of sweet champagne, the scent of fresh orange blossoms, and an absolute promise for eternity. The oranges had hit the sidewalk six months ago, and the rain had nearly ruined her borrowed clothes, but the courage of a south-side girl and the unyielding loyalty of a billionaire had rewritten the destiny of the Hale Meridian line.

As the first stars began to pierce the deep purple of the twilight sky, casting their reflection over the calm, clear waters of the lake, the long winter of their struggles disappeared into the dark for good, and their eternal dawn had finally, beautifully arrived.
