Chapter 5 - THE POISON IN THE BAG

Back at Mercy Hills Women’s Hospital, the atmosphere shifted from tense to frantic. Following Laura’s urgent directive, two officers and Nurse Clara began a meticulous search of the overnight bag Michael had brought into the room before his arrest.
I watched from the bed, my heart in my throat, as they unzipped the front pocket. Inside, nestled beneath a pair of clean sweatpants and a nursing bra, was a brand-new, sealed bottle of custom-compounded postpartum vitamins. The label bore the logo of a prominent local pharmacy, completely ordinary at first glance.
"Don't touch it with bare hands, Clara," one of the officers warned, using a pair of latex gloves to carefully lift the bottle and slide it into an evidence bag.
"I took one of those vitamins every day during my third trimester," I whispered, horror dawning on me. "He gave them to me himself every morning with breakfast."
Clara checked my chart on her tablet, her face pale. "Your blood pressure spikes during the final month of pregnancy were unexplained, Rachel. Your OB-GYN was baffled because you had no history of hypertension. If he was already micro-dosing you to lay the medical paperwork trail..." She trailed off, unable to finish the horrific thought.
He hadn't just been planning a sudden murder. He had been slowly poisoning me for months, ensuring that when the final, fatal dose was administered, the medical community would view my death as the tragic, predictable climax of a difficult pregnancy.
Emma began to cry again, a low, heartbroken sound. "He told me they were special candies to keep you strong, Mom. He made me bring him the water glass to give to you."
I pulled Emma into my arms, my tears falling into her hair. The psychological damage he had inflicted on our daughter was unpardonable. He had weaponized her innocence, turning her into an unwitting accomplice in her own mother's slow poisoning.
By midnight, Laura returned to the hospital. Her face was drawn with exhaustion, but her eyes held a grim satisfaction.
"The lab rushed the analysis on the vitamin bottle," Laura said, sitting on the edge of my bed. "Sophie was telling the truth. The top half of the capsules were normal vitamins. The bottom half—the ones meant for your postpartum recovery—were laced with lethal doses of a synthetic cardiac depressant. It’s an ironclad match for the chemical compound found in Michael’s work locker."
"Is it enough to deny bail?" I asked, clutching her hand.

"The judge saw the lab reports and listened to the recording an hour ago," Laura replied, a fierce smile finally breaking through her fatigue. "Michael Bennett and Sophie Vance are being held without bond at the Fulton County Jail. There is no way out for them, Rachel. The state is pursuing a charge of attempted first-degree murder and conspiracy."
I closed my eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. For the first time in months, the phantom weight on my chest lifted. The man who had haunted my marriage and gaslighted my reality was finally behind steel bars. But as I looked at my two children, I knew that surviving the plot was only the first chapter. The real battle—the public, agonizing trial—was about to begin.
