Chapter 9 - The Legacy

By late summer, Whitmore Ridge had transformed into a place of vibrant, joy-filled life.
The estate hosted its first annual Caroline Whitmore Historic Preservation Gala—not an exclusive gathering for fake socialites, but a charity event funding art education programs for public school children across the Hudson Valley.
Over three hundred people attended, filling the lawns with music, laughter, and light.
Daniel was busy showing guests through the newly opened historic library wing, while Emily sat on a garden bench, happily receiving congratulations on her pregnant belly. Thomas stood near the grand fountain, talking animatedly with old friends he hadn doubts seen in a decade.
Claire walked through the glass conservatory, admiring the hanging orchids and lush green ferns climbing the white stone columns.
Grant stepped up behind her, sliding his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder.
“Thinking about the wedding speech?” Grant murmured playfully into her ear.
Claire laughed softly, leaning back against his chest. “I was thinking about how different this room feels now.”
“It feels happy,” Grant said. “It feels like you.”
“It feels like home,” Claire corrected gently.
Grant reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a small, exquisite mahogany box carved with intricate rose patterns. He held it in front of her.
Claire’s breath hitched. She turned around in his arms, her heart fluttering wildly against her ribs.
“Grant...”
Grant dropped down onto one knee right there in the middle of the conservatory, under the warm sunlight filtering through the glass ceiling. He opened the box.
Inside sat a vintage ring—a stunning, brilliant-cut sapphire surrounded by a halo of micro-diamonds.
“This was crafted in 1912,” Grant said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with infinite tenderness. “It belonged to my grandmother. She wore it for sixty years through good times and hard times, and she never lost her joy.”
He looked up at her, his eyes shining with pure devotion.
“Claire Whitmore... you are the bravest, strongest, most beautiful woman I have ever known. I don’t want to just protect your past. I want to build your future. Will you marry me?”
Tears spilled over Claire’s lashes—not tears of pain or grief, but tears of pure, unadulterated happiness.

“Yes,” Claire whispered, her voice breaking into a joyful laugh. “Yes, Grant! A thousand times yes!”
Grant stood up, slipping the sapphire ring onto her finger, pulling her into a fierce, lifting hug. He spun her around under the glass dome as the sunlight hit the ring, throwing thousands of blue and white light sparks across the floral walls.
