Chapter 7 - THE FIRST BREATH

The double doors swung open.
Dr. Laurent stepped out into the corridor, pulling his surgical mask down around his neck. His face was drawn with extreme fatigue, but as his eyes met Alexandre’s, a long, deep smile spread across his features.
Alexandre stood up so fast he nearly lost his balance, holding tight to Sophie’s hand.
"Doctor?" Alexandre gasped, his heart stopping in his chest.
"The surgery was an absolute success, Mr. Moreau," Dr. Laurent said, his voice ringing through the quiet hallway like a bell. "The new tissue integrated perfectly. Her vascular response is normal, and her heart is beating strong."
Sophie let out a small, breathless gasp, her hands flying to her mouth.
"Is she... is she awake?" Alexandre asked, tears blinding his vision.
"She is currently coming out of anesthesia in the recovery suite," Laurent nodded, stepped aside to let them pass. "You can see her now. But please... keep her calm. Her body has been through an incredible ordeal."
Alexandre and Sophie walked slowly into the private recovery room.
The room was quiet, bathed in the soft, warm light of the early morning sun filtering through the sheer curtains. Claire lay in the center of the large bed. The terrifying, metallic roar of the ventilator was gone, replaced by a simple, light oxygen tube resting beneath her nose.
Her chest rose and fell in a deep, rhythmic, effortless pattern—the first natural, painless breaths she had drawn in years.
Sophie let go of Alexandre’s hand and ran to the side of the bed. "Mommy!" she whispered softly, resting her chin on the edge of the mattress.
Claire’s eyelashes fluttered open slowly.
She looked around the bright, clean room, her vision clearing as she focused on the small face resting beside her pillow.
"Sophie..." Claire breathed. Her voice was weak, barely a whisper, but it was clear, unburdened by the terrible rasp of fluid and pain. "My baby..."
"I'm here, Mommy!" Sophie cried, her small hands holding Claire’s fingers. "We're in Paris! The doctors fixed your lungs!"
Claire smiled—a soft, radiant smile that illuminated her entire face. She raised her hand weakly, touching her daughter’s cheek.
Then, Claire’s eyes drifted upward, stopping on the man standing at the foot of her bed.
Alexandre stood there, completely still, looking down at her with a mix of profound relief, deep humility, and overwhelming love. He looked like he was waiting for her to order him out of the room again.
Claire looked at Alexandre’s disheveled hair, his wrinkled white shirt, his bloodshot eyes, and the wet tear tracks on his cheeks. She looked down at Sophie, who was holding her father's gold pocket watch in her lap.
"Alexandre..." Claire whispered softly.
Alexandre took a slow, hesitant step forward, dropping to his knees beside the bed, bowing his head until his forehead rested against the mattress near her hand.
"I'm sorry, Claire," he sobbed, his shoulders shaking uncontrollably as seven years of buried grief and guilt burst out of him. "I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry..."
Claire looked down at the top of his head. She remembered the young man who had once filled her cold student apartment with laughter, the man who had abandoned her when the world got cold, and the man who had moved heaven and earth to fly a donor lung across Europe in the middle of the night to save her life.
Slowly, painfully, Claire lifted her hand and laid her fingers gently on Alexandre’s hair.

"You came back," she whispered, a single tear rolling down her cheek into her pillow.
"I will never leave again," Alexandre swore, looking up at her with fierce, absolute devotion. "Never again."
