CHAPTER 5 — The War Inside the House

The knock didn’t stop.
It hardened.
Each удар against the door felt less like impatience and more like a countdown.
Marco’s voice followed, calm but sharpened at the edges.
“Alessandro. I know you’re inside.”
My hands went cold.
Alessandro didn’t move away from me.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Not fear.
Not surprise.
Control.
Always control.
He stood between me and the door like a decision had already been made about the outcome of everything in that room.
“Stay behind me,” he said quietly.
I almost laughed.
“I don’t think I have that option anymore.”
His eyes flicked to mine.
For a fraction of a second, something softer passed through them.
Then it was gone.
“Then stay alive,” he corrected.
The door rattled again.
Harder this time.
A metal sound followed—something being tested against the lock.
Marco wasn’t waiting anymore.
He was entering.
The First Breach
The lock clicked.
Not broken.
Released.
Like someone had authorized the door to forget it was supposed to stay closed.
It swung open slowly.
Marco stood there.
Wet from rain.
Expression unreadable.
But his eyes—
his eyes didn’t belong to the man I remembered.
They belonged to someone standing too close to consequences.
Behind him, two men waited in the hallway.
Not casually.
Positioned.
Balanced.
Ready.
My stomach tightened.
“So it’s true,” Marco said quietly.
His gaze locked on Alessandro.
“You came back.”
Alessandro didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“I never left,” he said.
Marco’s jaw tightened slightly.
A flicker of something human crossed his face.
Then disappeared.
“You understand what this does?” Marco asked.
Alessandro’s voice stayed calm.
“I understand what you did.”
Silence.
Heavy.
Dangerous.
Then Marco’s eyes shifted to me.
And that’s when everything changed.
Emma Becomes the Target
I felt it before I understood it.
The shift.
The recalibration.
Like I had stopped being a person in the room and became an objective.
Marco spoke carefully.
“You should not be here.”
My throat tightened. “I live here.”
A pause.
Then a faint, almost sad exhale from him.
“No,” he said. “You were placed here.”
My heart skipped.
Alessandro moved slightly—just enough to block Marco’s line of sight.
“Don’t,” Alessandro warned quietly.
Marco ignored him.
“Emma Carter,” he continued, like reading from a file instead of speaking to me. “Background checked. Monitored. Observed.”
My breath caught.
“That’s not true.”
Marco’s expression didn’t change.
“It is.”
I shook my head, backing up half a step.
Alessandro’s hand shifted slightly behind him—closer to mine now.
Not touching.
But protecting.
Marco’s voice softened.
“This was never supposed to reach you.”
I snapped. “Stop talking like I’m an object.”
For the first time, something cracked in Marco’s control.
Just slightly.
“You were never outside it,” he said.
And then—
the hallway behind him moved.
The Split Inside Loyalty
One of Marco’s men stepped forward.
Not aggressively.
But deliberately.
“Marco,” the man said quietly, “this isn’t approved escalation.”
Marco didn’t look away from me.
“Stand down,” he said.
The man hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Alessandro moved.
Fast.
Not chaotic.
Precise.
He grabbed Marco by the collar and slammed him into the doorframe before the others fully processed it.
Glass in a nearby frame cracked.
My breath caught.
“Stop!” I shouted.
But it was already too late.
The hallway erupted into motion.
One of Marco’s men reached for Alessandro.
Alessandro twisted, deflected, shoved him back into the wall with controlled force.
Not brutality.
Efficiency.
Marco recovered instantly, grabbing Alessandro’s arm and forcing space between them.
“Don’t make this worse,” Marco hissed.
Alessandro’s voice dropped dangerously low.
“You already did.”
The tension snapped tighter.
And I realized—
this wasn’t just confrontation.
It was division.
Inside their own system.
Emma Steps Into the Line
A hand grabbed my wrist.
Not gently.
Not violently.
Decisively.
I gasped.
One of Marco’s men had moved past them.
Too fast.
Too quiet.
And now I was no longer behind Alessandro.
I was exposed.
“Let go of her,” Alessandro said instantly.
The man didn’t.
Marco turned sharply.
“Don’t touch her,” Marco ordered.
That command meant something.
Because the grip loosened slightly.
But didn’t release.
That pause was everything.
And I understood—
they weren’t unified anymore.
They were splitting.
Over me.
Or because of me.
I didn’t know which was worse.
The Truth About Marco Breaks Open
Alessandro forced the man away from me with a sharp strike, then pulled me back behind him fully this time.
My breathing was uneven.
My heart pounding so hard I could barely hear.
Marco stepped back slowly.
He looked at Alessandro.
Then at me.
Then said something I didn’t expect.
“I tried to keep her out of this,” he said.
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed. “No. You tried to control the outcome.”
Marco didn’t deny it.
That silence was answer enough.
Then Marco exhaled slowly.
“You were never supposed to survive the explosion,” he said to Alessandro.
Alessandro didn’t move.
“I did.”
“Yes,” Marco said quietly. “And that changed everything.”
A pause.
Then Marco looked at me again.
“And you were never supposed to see him again after that.”
My stomach dropped.
“Why?” I whispered.
Marco hesitated.
For the first time, uncertainty crossed his face.
“Because you are the variable they cannot stabilize.”
That sentence hit wrong.
Too technical.
Too cold.
Alessandro stepped forward.
“Who is ‘they’?” he demanded.
Marco’s jaw tightened.
Then—
very quietly—
he said:
“The ones above both of us.”
The Room Stops Being Safe
A sudden sound outside.
Multiple vehicles.
Doors closing.
Movement.
Too coordinated to be coincidence.
Alessandro immediately went still.
Marco noticed too.
His expression changed.
“Too late,” he muttered.
My chest tightened. “What’s happening?”
Neither of them answered immediately.
Because they already knew.
Alessandro finally spoke.
“They followed the breach.”
Marco nodded once.
“Containment response,” he said quietly.
My stomach dropped. “Containment?”
Marco looked at me directly.
“No more internal split,” he said. “They clean everything now.”
My breath caught.
“Everything?”
Alessandro’s voice dropped.
“Everyone.”
Silence.
Then Marco looked at Alessandro.
“I can delay them,” he said.
Alessandro frowned slightly. “Why would you?”
Marco hesitated.
Then his gaze shifted to me.
And something almost human surfaced again.
“Because she shouldn’t pay for this,” he said quietly.
That was the first real fracture.
Not tactical.
Moral.
Emma’s Choice Becomes Real
The sound outside intensified.
Doors.
Steps.
Positioning.
I looked between them.
And suddenly I understood something I didn’t want to understand:
I was not being protected.
I was being contested.
“I’m not leaving without answers,” I said.
Alessandro turned sharply. “Emma—”
“No,” I cut him off. “I’ve been watched, followed, and lied to since the funeral. I deserve the truth.”
Marco looked at me for a long moment.
Then said quietly:
“The truth is what starts wars.”
Alessandro stepped closer to me.
“And you’re already in one,” he said.
Cliff End — The House Is Breached
A loud impact hit the front door.
Not knocking.
Not testing.
Breaking.
Wood cracked.
Metal strained.
Marco moved instantly toward the hallway.
“Last chance,” he said under his breath to Alessandro.
Alessandro didn’t answer.
He only looked at me.
And in that moment, I saw it.
Not the mafia boss.
Not the survivor.
Not the man who had died and returned.
Just him.
And the choice he was making.
He reached for my hand.
Finally.
And said:
“Stay with me.”
Another удар hit the door.
Harder.
The lock began to fail.
Marco raised his weapon toward the hallway.
May you like
And as the door finally splintered—
the house became a battlefield.
